The Apparitions of the Virgin Mary in
San Sebastian de Garabandal
022 Simón and María, Jacinta’s parents
Testimony of a group of neighbors in the village.
Rosario.
Jacinta gives the
Virgin a Rosary to kiss.
Dice
María did not have confidence in it, but I always believed because I watched so much. I spent half a year going with her to the calleja (Dirt road to the Pines)at six in the morning, accompanying my daughter to pray the Rosary. Half a year, whether it was good or bad weather, during winter.
Yo
I would say to her: you sleep well, and I’ll call you at six.
Photo: Simón, Jacinta’s father, worked on the fields and with the cattle. For a long time, he accompanied his daughter to pray the Rosary in the calleja.
Y
Me dice ella:
On one occasion, I didn’t call her because I had gone to bed at two in the morning. Jacinta had an apparition at night. She said to me:
─
─ “Father, call me at four, because the Virgin says I will have an apparition then.
nosotros. Le dije:
The Virgin would not wake them if they were sleeping, so we were the ones who had to wake them up. I told her:
─
“Tú duerme tranquila que ya te llamaré.”
─ “You sleep in peace that I’ll call you.”
La
llamo a las seis, dice ella:
I called her at six, and she said:
─
“Papá, ¿qué hora es?”
─ “Papa, what time is it?”
─ “Las seis.”
─ “It is Six O’clock.”
─
“Y ¿cómo no me llamó a las cuatro?.
─ “And How come you didn’t call me at four?”
─
─ “I went to bed at two. Did you think I was going to stay up the whole night? The Vision should have called you.”
Se
me hecho a llorar.
She began to cry.
─
“¿Te levantas o me acuesto yo?”
─ “Are you getting up, or should I go back to bed?”
She got up, and she didn’t have an apparition for a few months. Some people say that they do this (have an Apparition) whenever the girls feel like it. Mine did not. I can say that she didn’t have it whenever she willed it.
Don
Don Máximo converted during the Apparitions. He was not Catholic, he was Protestant, and he came with the Andreu brothers. I remember the night when Fr. Andreu was in Ceferino’s house; his leg had been badly injured in a car accident and then he went to sleep in Fania’s house, where Don Máximo was staying as well. Two men carried him there to sleep.
Jacinta
No
Jacinta had an Apparition and she went to this house, knocked on the door and went inside. Don Máximo was first and then Fr. Ramón Andreu, they were sleeping in the same room, each one in their own bed. Don Máximo was nearer to the door. Fr. Andreu was praying that if she would give the crucifix to Máximo to kiss he would kiss it and not refuse. Jacinta gave Máximo the crucifix, and he kissed it. It isn’t that he was a bad man, but he was Protestant. After this, Máximo converted and was baptized. His wife was Catholic.
The night of the screams in which the girls saw the Chastisement:
The entire village went to confession. A priest was with us. He was a priest that was headed for Santo Toribio, but they guided him poorly in Unquera and he came here. When the cowherds descended, they learned what had happened, and they went to confess.
Esto
estuvo muy abandonado. Habían de haber escrito todas las cosas.
All this was much neglected. Everything should have been written down.
Sobre
los Pinos:
About the Pines:
Me
I remember when they were planted during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera. Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship began in 1925. They planted these Pines in about a hectare of land. The other Pines, banana trees, and other trees died, and only these Pines remained. During this time the president of the village was Maximina’s father Serafín.
I had to go after the cattle so I couldn’t see many of the Apparitions, but in the winter I did, because I was home. One night the Apparition lasted seven hours; there was a rest period in between, but they were in ecstasy for four consecutive hours, without rest break but moving. Jacinta also had an Apparition at home when she was sick. She was talking with the Vision from her bed for two hours.
Otro
Another day she got up, and her mother stood by the door. She thought to herself: “Tonight you are not going out!” But when the hour of the call arrived, Jacinta took her mother by the arm and ran and marched without taking a jacket. Then Jacinta’s mother gave Loli a jacket to take it to her to wear because she had a very bad sore throat.
Foto:
She was one of the women who rang the bell in the evening to call the neighbors to say prayers for the souls in Purgatory.
me viene a ver a mí.
On one occasion, when she stopped having an Apparition, she said to the other girls: “Ask the Virgin when she is coming to see me.” But the Virgin did not say when. Then, one day Don Máximo arrived and when he found out, he asked the Virgin for Jacinta to see her again. Don Máximo was in the Church praying and Loli came there in ecstasy where Jacinta was and said: “Ask the Virgin when she is coming to see me.”
María:
Jacinta no sabía que Don Máximo estaba ahí y luego me dice Don Máximo:
María: Jacinta did not know that Don Máximo was there and then Don Máximo said to me:
─
─ “After I came, I became aware of this and I went to ask the Virgin to give Jacinta an Apparition.”
Estaba
cenando y llega Mari Loli. Dice Jacinta:
She was eating dinner when Mari Loli arrived. Jacinta said:
─
─ “Loli, ask the Virgin when I am going to see her, when do I get to see her.”
Y
Loli was in ecstasy, and she became very happy and said:
─
“luego.”
─ “Soon.”
Y
poco después Jacinta hecho a correr detrás de Loli y poco después volvió a ver
a la Virgen.
A little after that, Jacinta ran behind Loli and soon after she saw the Virgin again.
Entonces
Máximo lloraba:
Then Máximo cried:
─
“Que he estado pidiendo que Jacinta tuviese Aparición. Una prueba mas.”
─ I have been praying that Jacinta would have an Apparition. One more proof.”
Simón: It happened that Jacinta had a bad temper, and one day her mother asked her to do something and she did not do it. When we were in the Cuadro, the Angel used to give them Communion there many times. On this occasion, the Angel didn’t give Jacinta Communion and that night her mother said to her:
─
─ “See how you weren’t prepared, so the Angel didn’t give you Communion.”
Ella se quedó
triste.
She was sad. Sometimes they were in different places and at times this is how they were warned and they went to meet there. That day, he separated Jacinta from the rest without giving her Communion, and later she told that to her mother.
Another day we high over the village in a winter shelter that we have there. We were collecting grass. Fr. Valentín used to come to say Mass in the village some days and Jacinta went to the Church to see if she could confess before Mass and receive the Sacrament. She did not arrive in time, so she confessed after Mass and she didn’t receive Communion that day. In the afternoon, the Angel gave her Communion.
A
Sometimes we saw that the Angel would also separate some of the other girls. I know of my daughter because she had not obeyed her mother and as a result, the Angel would not give her Communion until she confessed.
Vino
A Jewish woman came here with someone from
María was afraid that it could be the devil who was appearing. She gave Jacinta and Loli a bottle of holy water and told them:
─
─ “When you have the Apparition, throw it at the Vision.”
When they had the Apparition, they threw the holy water of the bottle, but the holy water did not go toward the Vision. It turned in the opposite direction and fell where the Jewish woman was standing. It was a sign that the Virgin wanted her to be baptized.
María: The truth is that I was very distrustful. I did not fully understand these things. It was one of the first Apparitions and I said:
─
─ “Jacinta, - Mari Loli was there too,- I have here a bottle of holy water. When you have the Apparition, throw the holy water at it in case it is the devil.”
Entonces
Then they had the Apparition and Mari Loli began to throw the holy water at the Apparition. The Jewish woman was wearing a white blouse. Loli threw the holy water, and it fell on the Jewish woman, who was on the other side. When they had returned to the normal state, Chón (Asunción) said: “Jacinta, sit at this table with regular water and throw it.” It fell at her feet but the holy water had fallen on the Jewish woman, and not in front of her.
Aquella
Era
una casa vieja. Entonces me vine ahí y Jacinta estaba cenando.
That house was very small and one day I had a headache and the house was full of people. I said: “I’m going to the other house.” Some of the boys slept there. I had a room here and I said: “I’m going there.” It was an old house. So, I went there and Jacinta was having dinner. Jacinta did not leave the house and did not have an apparition.
Yo
dondequiera me encuentran.
After supper, I went to this other house and when I was calmer, there was a knock on the door. It was Conchita, Loli, Don José Ramón, and a crowd of people. I opened the door, they entered, and they surrounded my bed. They made the sign of the cross on the pillow and I could not fall asleep again. I said to myself: “it is useless to hide, because wherever I go, they will find me.”
Simón: They went to the beds. If you were in a house that wasn’t yours or with another woman, they would discover it. Sometimes when a child is sick, a married couple will put him between them in the middle of the bed. Then they made three crosses. It seemed that they knew about each person that slept in the bed and if they made three crosses, then it was because a child slept there.
In my sister Tiva’s house, they entered a room and made a cross at the head of the bed and another at the foot, and that is how the girls slept. They would enter a house and discovered it all. Who did ever inform them?
Si
If they witnessed the wrong behavior in a girl and a boy, they would say: “Oh, I thought you were married!” Many things were discovered.
Vino
Someone from
a saber?”
A man from Unquera named Jacinto had given a crucifix to
Jacinta for the Virgin to kiss two months before. He heard that she
separated the kissed crucifixes and medals. He said: “How is she
going to know?” She decided to do a test. In Ceferino’s house,
Jacinta fell in ecstasy and she was there with Fr. Valentín, the priest from
Cosío, and there were many people. Jacinto said to Loli:
─
─ Give this crucifix to Jacinta so that she gives it to the Virgin to kiss.
Le
coge Jacinta y dice bien claro:
Jacinta took it and said quite clearly:
─
“Está besado.”
─ “It has been kissed.”
Le
pregunta Don Valentín a Jacinto:
Fr. Valentín asked Jacinto:
─
“¿está seguro que está besado?”
─ “Are you sure that it’s been kissed?”
Le
dice Jacinto:
Jacinto told him:
─
─ “I’m sure! I’m sure! Two months ago I gave it to this same girl to be kissed.”
Entonces yo,
como era tan desconfiada, le digo:
María: We were eating supper and Tiva’s granddaughter came. Someone had come from a line saying, “a woman came so that when you have an Apparition, you give this Crucifix to the Virgin be kissed and then you take it to its owner.” Then I, since I was so untrusting, said:
─
“¿Qué sabe ella quién es su dueño?
─ “Does she know who the owner is?”
Tuvo
Jacinta had an apparition and I followed her. She walked around and then she went with many people to where the woman was already sleeping and I said:
─
“¿Es tuyo?”
─ “Is this yours?”
Y
me dice:
And she told me:
─
─ “Yes, it’s mine. I wanted to have a proof.”

─ “One night María Cruz was in ecstasy and Escolático, her father, was with her. Since the people said that while the girls were in ecstasy, they did not feel pain, I decided to do a test. I got tired of pinching her legs, but it was not possible for her to move, and she did not move at all, it was as though I was touching this stool.”

daughters were here. They had gone to the Caves at
After that, she left and went onto the street, since that had taken place inside the house, and her father was with her. The girl said: “Oh, papa, the Virgin is telling me that a man is pinching me! They went to look and her ankle was bloody. That was the way that they used to test them.

─ “Several of us were sitting together, as we are now, next to Piedad’s house. If the girls went into ecstasy and took your arm, you had to run with them. You could not break away. That night Conchita went into ecstasy and she grasped a monk by the arm. We were sitting and the people began to run after her, with little light and many corners, since the houses are all built so close together. The monk ran and we saw that he could not run anymore. I had to dry his clothes because they were wet with sweat. I said to the girl, ‘why are you running like this?’ They didn’t realize it but they would follow the Apparition everywhere.
These things would happen to some people as tests to prove that the Apparitions are true and later it gave them happiness to know that the Virgin wanted to give them proof.

gana a correr.
─ “On one occasion, a boy who was a good athlete arrived and said: “No one can beat me in a race. No girl can beat me.” One of the girls had an ecstasy and left running and this boy ran after her. It was clear that the Virgin did not aim to outrun him in the race but at this point the girl ran at such a speed right toward the wall of a house that the boy thought: “if this is not from God, this girl will kill herself on the wall.” The boy had to stop in time, but the girl continued without stopping until she reached the wall, and then she stopped in an instant. She said to the Virgin: “Oh, it is so he will believe…! The boy heard this and believed since it was not humanly possible to stop in an instant at that speed.”

Me decía
ojos.
─ “María, Simón’s wife, owed me money. I don’t know why she owed me money, but she was giving me some puppies and she came to deliver them and I said: “Leave me alone, I don’t know what I see. I see a star passing over the roof of Ceferino’s house and then going over the Church.” She told me: “I will put the money in the pocket,” but I was enthusiastic about what I saw. We arrived at Ceferino’s house and Don Valentín, the pastor, was there. He had also seen the star, and he was talking with a young outsider who was saying:” I have seen a star just over the tile roof.” Father Valentín, in order to test the boy, would say to him, “That is not true!” I arrived and I told Fr. Valentín: “It is very true.” I said to them: “What is happening? I have seen it with my own eyes.”

─ “On one occasion the child said that the Virgin told her that the Cup was already filling up with the sins of the world, and the Virgin, as our Mother, did not want us to be condemned. If we would help Her and visit the Blessed Sacrament and fulfill the Message, then she would help us be good and save us.”

─ We were better before the Apparitions than now, me included. Now we are very bad. We were better for the Church before. Before, the men here did not miss Mass or the Rosary, and today they do nothing. In the month of May, not one man would miss coming to Church. We would stop work and everyone would come. The Church was full. Those who came from outside had a great devotion. Those who come here come with great faith. They come with faith, without it no one would come to this village. Although there are always people who come and pass a while here, sometimes mocking it. But those who come to stay come with faith. They go to Church with fantastic devotion.

conocerle. Eso es una cosa maravillosa.
─ When the girls are in ecstasy, they are not in this world. They do not hear you, see you or anything. But if you give an object to the other girls for them to have the Virgin kiss, they can give it to the one in ecstasy. They take it, and the girl receives it in ecstasy and then returns it to the owner without looking at him. This is a marvelous thing.

─ Another time, there were four or five of us and one was delayed in giving the girls the objects and she started to cry. “Oh Lady! Why are you crying?” Everyone gave an object but me, because I did not arrive in time. Then I said, “give me the objects and I’ll give them to another girl.” I found her crying again later and I said: “but ma’am, why are you crying now.” “How can I not cry when the very same girl brought me back what was mine in her hand after the Virgin had kissed it.”
