El Sagrado Corazón de Jesús se aparece a Jacinta. Muy cerca de ella, la invita con su mano derecha a acercarse a Él.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus appears to Jacinta. While very near her, He invited her to come closer to him with His right hand.

El Sagrado Corazón de Jesús en Garabandal.

El 30 de Junio de 1961, último viernes del mes consagrado al Corazón de Jesús y dos dias antes de venir la Virgen por primera vez, Jacinta vió al Señor, de pie sobre una especie de nubecilla blanca, vestido de blanco y manto rojo, mostrando su Corazón, de un rojo vivo y que despedía rayos blancos y dorados, sobre la parte izquierda de su pecho.

No habló a la niña; pero con su mano izquierda le presentaba aquel su Corazón, mientras le hacía señas, con la derecha, para que se acercara. Jacinta obedeció, y quedó deslumbrada por la belleza y resplandor de sus vestidos, más aún de su persona.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus in Garabandal.

On June 30, 1961, the last Friday in the month consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and two days before the Virgin came for the first time, Jacinta saw the Lord.  He was standing over a white cloud, dressed in white with a red mantle, showing his heart, which was a living red color which had white and golden rays over the left side of his chest.

He didn’t speak to the child, but with his left hand he presented her his Heart while he signaled with his right hand that she should come near.  Jacinta obeyed, and was blinded by the beauty and splendor of his clothes and even more by his person.

Esta visión de Jacinta tuvo lugar en la Calleja. La visión le dejó una impresión indeleble. Dos cosas le impresionaron sobremanera: la mirada de Jesús y su porte majestuoso. Aquella mirada penetraba hasta lo más profundo del alma, aquel mirar del Señor "estaba impregnado de un Amor inmenso".

Dice Jacinta que no hubiera podido estar así mucho tiempo porque su alma se habría ido con Jesús.

This Vision took place in the Calleja.  The Vision left her with an indelible impression.  Two things that were most impressive:  the glance of Jesus and his majestic appearance.  That glance penetrated to the most profound depths of the soul, and that glance of the Lord was “full of immense Love.”

Jacinta said that she could not have remained like that for much longer because her soul would have gone with Jesus.

Jacinta se casó en 1976 con Jeffrey Moyniham, y vive en Los Angeles, California, con su esposo y su hija María.

Para Jacinta el todo de Garabandal es la visión que tuvo del Corazón de Jesús. Solo fue una vez, y no por largo tiempo, pero la lleva dentro de sus entrañas, y es actualmente el todo en su vida.

Jacinta married Jeffrey Moyniham in 1976, and lives in Los Angeles, California with her husband and her daughter, María.

For Jacinta, the fullness of Garabandal is the Vision she had of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  It was only once, and not for a long time, but she carries the memory inside of her, and it has influenced all of her life.

She lives an exemplary married life; she loves to weave, and she makes beautiful things: sweaters, scarves, shawls, and blankets.

Su hermano Miguel Angel vivió en mi hogar y trabajó en mi Oficina Médica por dos años. Actualmente tiene un hotel en Garabandal, la Posada San Miguel.

Her brother Miguel Angel lived in my home and worked in my Medical Office for two years.  He now has a hotel in Garabandal, the St. Michael Inn.

Interview that Fr. Francisco A. Benac, S.J. made with Jacinta.

During one of his visits to the United States, Fr. Francisco A. Benac, S.J., founder of the Garabandal Center in Bombay, India, had an interview with Jacinta Moyniham and her husband, Jeff, in California.

In this interview, Fr. Benac speaks with Jacinta about various themes:  the first Apparition, the Vision of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the first Message, Fr. Luís Andreu, the Commission, her visits to Rome, the Warning, and the Punishment.

P. Benac: Estoy muy contento de este encuentro en vísperas de Navidad.

Jacinta: Gracias Padre, Jeff no está ahora pero vendrá mas tarde.

P. Benac: ¿Donde has estado desde que te casaste en Garabandal?

Jacinta: Estuve cinco meses en Garabandal y otros cinco meses en Andalucía. Cuando Jeff embarcó, estuve tres meses con mis padres. Después estuvimos cuatro meses en Nueva York y, cuando Jeff dejó la Navy, pasamos otros cinco meses en España. Después estuvimos seis meses en Fullerton, California, antes de venir aquí, a Los Angeles, en Agosto de 1977.

Fr. Benac:  I am very happy to meet you during the vigil before Christmas.

Jacinta:  Thank you, Father.  Jeff isn’t here now, but he will come later.

Fr. Benac:  Where have you been since you married in Garabandal?

Jacinta:  I was in Garabandal for five months, and then in Andalusia for another five months.  When Jeff shipped out, I was with my parents for another three months.  Then we were in New York for four months, and when Jeff left the Navy, we spent another five months in Spain.  After that, we were in Fullerton, California for six months before coming here to Los Angeles in August of 1977.

P. Benac: ¿Qué recuerdas de la primera Aparición de San Miguel?

Jacinta: Era domingo; Mari Loli y yo estábamos jugando cuando nos dimos cuenta que Conchita y Mari Cruz habían desaparecido. Entonces Loli, yo y otra niña fuimos detrás del campanario de la Iglesia pensando que se habrían escondido allí.

Dije a Loli:

─ “Me parece que van a estar donde el manzano porque el último domingo Conchita, Mari Cruz y yo fuimos al manzano a coger manzanas.”

P. Benac: ¿Era este el famoso manzano del huerto del maestro?

Jacinta: Sí, sí, el mismo. Nosotras estuvimos allí antes.

Fr. Benac:  What do you remember about the first Apparition with St. Michael?

Jacinta:  It was Sunday; Mari Loli and I were playing when we realized that Conchita and Mari Cruz had disappeared.  Then Loli, another girl, and I went behind the Church bell tower, thinking that maybe they were hiding back there.

I said to Loli:

─ “I think they are in the apple orchard, because last Sunday Conchita, Mari Cruz, and I went there to pick apples.”

Fr. Benac:  Is this the schoolteacher’s famous apple orchard?

Jacinta:  Yes, yes, the same one.  We had been there before.

P. Benac: ¿Qué sucedió después?

Jacinta: Vimos a Conchita y Mari Cruz moviendo las ramas del manzano y les gritamos:

─ “¿Qué estáis haciendo?”

Entonces ellas intentaron esconderse pero nosotras saltamos dentro del huerto desde la pared de piedra que bordea la calleja y nos reunimos con ellas a comer las manzanas.

Después de esto, mientras jugábamos a las canicas en la Calleja, empezamos a sentir remordimiento por haber robado las manzanas, pensando que el Ángel estaría triste en tanto que el demonio estaría contento.

Mientras hablábamos, de repente, Conchita, se quedó mirando a lo alto mientras decía:

─ “¡Oh, oh!”

Estábamos asustadas, pensando que le daba un ataque, y cuando ya íbamos a correr a llamar a su madre, de repente, nosotras también vimos la Visión y exclamamos:

─ “El Angel.”

Fr. Benac:  What happened then?

Jacinta:  We saw Conchita and Mari Cruz moving the branches of the apple tree and we yelled to them:

─ “What are you doing?”

Then they tried to hide but we jumped into the orchard from the stone wall that separated it from the road and we joined them to eat apples.

Afterwards, while we played marbles in the Calleja, we began to feel remorse for having stolen the apples, thinking that the Angel would be sad and the devil would be happy.

While we spoke, suddenly Conchita was caught up looking up and said:

─ “Oh, oh!”

We were frightened, thinking that she was having an attack and when we were about to go to tell her mother, suddenly we also saw the Vision and exclaimed:

─ “The Angel.”

P. Benac: ¿Fue esta la primera vez que el Angel se te apareció?

Jacinta: Sí, Padre; fue por un corto tiempo. Dijimos a la gente que habíamos visto al Angel. Fuimos a la Iglesia y empezamos a llorar.

P. Benac: ¿Mari Loli y tú caísteis en éxtasis?

Jacinta: Sí, por esto dijimos a la gente que habíamos visto al Angel.

P. Benac: ¿Cómo reaccionó la gente del pueblo ante esto?

Jacinta: Ellos pensaban que algo extraño sucedió que nos había perturbado la mente.

P. Benac: ¿Cómo te sentiste entonces?

Jacinta: No sentí ningún temor ni nada porque me parecía todo tan natural que pensaba que todo el mundo podía ver lo que yo veía. Me parecía una cosa normal.

Fr. Benac:  Was this the first time that the Angel appeared to you?

Jacinta:  Yes, Father.  It was for a short time.  We told the people that we had seen the Angel.  We went to the Church and began to cry.

Fr. Benac:  Did you and Mari Loli fall into ecstasy?

Jacinta:  Yes, and because of this, we told people that we had seen the Angel.

Fr. Benac:  How did the people of the village react to this?

Jacinta:  They thought that something strange had happened and that we were mentally disturbed.

Fr. Benac:  How did you feel then?

Jacinta:  I didn’t feel any fear because all of it seemed so natural that I thought everyone could see what I saw.  It seemed like a normal thing to me.

P. Benac: ¿Cuándo se te apareció la Santísima Virgen por primera vez?

Jacinta: Fue en la fiesta de la Visitación de Nuestra Señora a Santa Isabel, el dos de Julio (de 1961).

P. Benac: ¿Qué sentiste al verla?

Jacinta: Para mí fue como encontrarme con mi Madre después de una ausencia de muchos años. Por eso le decía tantas cosas. En ese momento no pensaba en la importancia que este acontecimiento iba a tener.

P. Benac: He leído sobre la Visión que tuviste del Sagrado Corazón, dime más sobre esto.

Jacinta: Recuerdo un día, cuando nosotras cuatro, siguiendo la llamada de Nuestra Señora, fuimos un poco más arriba de donde tuvimos la primera Aparición del Ángel. Nadie del pueblo nos siguió. De repente las otras tres cayeron en éxtasis al ver al Angel. Yo estaba un poco más atrás viéndolas a ellas en éxtasis y me dije:

─ “Pero si yo no veo nada.”

Entonces, de repente, se me apareció el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Me impresionó profundamente. Él no me habló pero su mirada penetró en lo más profundo de mi corazón.

Fr. Benac:  When did the Most Holy Virgin appear to you for the first time?

Jacinta:  It was on the feast of the Visitation of Our Lady to St. Elizabeth, July 2, 1961.

Fr. Benac:  What did you feel when you saw her?

Jacinta:  For me it was like finding myself with my Mother after an absence of many years.  That is why I was telling her so many things.  In that moment, I didn’t think about the importance that this event would have.

Fr. Benac:  I read about the Vision you had of the Sacred Heart.  Tell me more about this.

Jacinta:  I remember one day when the four of us followed the call of Our Lady and we went a little higher up than the place where we’d had the first Apparition of the Angel.  No one from the village followed us.  Suddenly, the other three fell into ecstasy when they saw the Angel.  I was a little behind them, and when I saw them in ecstasy, I said to myself:

─ “But, I do not see anything.”

Then, suddenly, the Sacred Heart of Jesus appeared to me.  It impressed me profoundly.  He didn’t speak to me but his glance penetrated the most profound depths of my heart.

P. Benac: ¿Qué es lo que más te impresionó?

Jacinta: Su ojos, su figura; una mirada que penetraba tan profundamente en mí que no lo puedo explicar.

P. Benac: ¿Qué pensaste en ese momento?

Jacinta: Esta visión del Sagrado Corazón me impresionó más que la de Nuestra Señora, aun cuando no le he vuelto a ver otra vez. Tengo una fuerte sensación de ver a álguien muy querido cada vez que veo su imagen.

P. Benac: Este sentimiento, ¿sigue vivo en tí?

Jacinta: Sí, Padre, cuando veo su Imagen o hablo de Él, como ahora, siento algo dentro de mí que no puedo explicar.

P. Benac: Jacinta, cuando pasaste la época de dudas, ¿dudaste de esta Visión?

Jacinta: Nó Padre, esta visión siempre ha permanecido viva en mi mente. Recuerdo habérselo dicho a mi madre, cuando dudaba si había visto a la Virgen y al Angel; pero de esta visión del Sagrado Corazón, aunque me fuese a morir, yo insistiría en que fue verdad. Es algo de lo que nunca dudé.

Fr. Benac: What impressed you the most?

Jacinta:  His eyes, his figure; a glance that penetrated me so profoundly that I cannot explain it.

Fr. Benac:  What did you think in this moment?

Jacinta:  This vision of the Sacred Heart impressed me more that the visions of Our Lady, even though I did not see it again.  I have a strong sensation of seeing someone very dear each time I see His image.

Fr. Benac:  Does this sentiment continue in you?

Jacinta:  Yes, Father, when I see His Image or speak about Him, like now, I feel something inside of me that I cannot explain.

Fr. Benac:  Jacinta, when you had a period of doubts, did you doubt this Vision?

Jacinta:  No, Father, this Vision has always been alive in my mind.  I remember speaking about it to my mother when I doubted whether I had seen the Virgin and Angel, but even if I was going to die, I would insist that this Vision of the Sacred Heart was true.  It is something I have never doubted.

P. Benac: Esta visión, ¿te llevó a amar más a Dios? ¿Sentiste si quería Él algo especial de tí?

Jacinta: No sé cómo contestar a esa pregunta porque Él no me habló pero mi corazón se sintió, desde entonces, cada día mucho más cerca de Él.

P. Benac: Dime de la Comunión invisible que recibiste y de la Comunión visible que recibió Conchita. ¿Estabas tú allí aquella noche?

Jacinta: Esperé hasta las doce de la noche pero el Ángel no había venido y me fui a casa. Más tarde la madre de Loli me dijo lo que había sucedido.

P. Benac: ¿Qué impresión os produjo a las tres este prodigio de la Comunión visible de Conchita?

Jacinta: Yo sentí que era una prueba del Cielo de la realidad de las Apariciones para toda la gente.

Fr. Benac:  Did this Vision make you love God more?  Did it make you feel that He wanted something special from you?

Jacinta:  I don’t know how to answer that question because He didn’t speak but from this day on my heart has felt itself much closer to Him.

Fr. Benac:  Tell me about the invisible Communion you received and about the visible Communion Conchita received.  Were you there that night?

Jacinta:  I waited until midnight, but the Angel hadn’t come, so I went home.  Later, Loli’s mother told me what had happened.

Fr. Benac:  What impression did the prodigy of Conchita’s visible Communion have on the three of you?

Jacinta:  I felt that it was a proof from Heaven for all people of the reality of the Apparitions.

P. Benac: ¿Apareció Nuestra Señora más bien sola o con el Niño Jesús o el Ángel?

Jacinta: Algunas veces traía al Niño Jesús, pero la mayoría de las veces venía sola.

P. Benac: ¿Puedes describirme a la Virgen tal como la recuerdas?

Jacinta extiende sus brazos abiertos y ligeramente levantados y dice:

─ Así; nos miraba, sonriendo, con una expresión de alegría y de bondad.

P. Benac: ¿Recuerdas alguna cosa que Nuestra Señora mencionase y por la que tendríamos que rezar?

Jacinta: Siempre nos decía de rezar por los Sacerdotes.

Fr. Benac:  Did Our Lady appear alone more often, or with the Child Jesus or the Angel?

Jacinta:  Sometimes she would bring the Child Jesus, but the majority of the times she came alone.

Fr. Benac:  Can you describe the Virgin as you remember her?

Jacinta extends her open arms and lifts them; she says:

─ She was like this.  She looked at us smiling, with an expression of joy and goodness.

Fr. Benac:  Do you remember something that Our Lady mentioned that we should pray for?

Jacinta:  She always told us to pray for the Priests.

P. Benac: ¿Qué decía Ella de los sacerdotes?

Jacinta: Que son los que deben fortalecer la fé de los creyentes, dar ejemplo con sus vidas y vivir una vida de fé profunda.

P. Benac: ¿Que más os dijo de los sacerdotes?

Jacinta: Ella nos pidió que rezáramos para que ellos dieran testimonio de su Hijo, Jesús. Dijo esto porque algunas cosas estaban yendo por mal camino.

P. Benac: ¿Cómo era la cara de Nuestra Señora?

Jacinta: Era muy hermosa, su pelo largo, de color castaño oscuro, le caía suavemente por las espaldas.

P. Benac: ¿Y la expresión de su cara y de sus ojos?

Jacinta: Es muy dificil de describir; ningún artista la podría reproducir.

Fr. Benac:  What did she say about the priests?

Jacinta:  That they are the ones who should fortify the faith of believers, that they should set an example with their lives, and live a life of profound faith.

Fr. Benac:  What else did she tell you about the priests?

Jacinta:  She asked us to pray for them because they are the ones who give testimony for Her Son Jesus.  She said this because certain things were going down the wrong road.

Fr. Benac:  What did the face of Our Lady look like?

Jacinta:  It was very beautiful; her hair was long, and dark brown, and it fell over her back.

Fr. Benac:  And the expression of her face and eyes?

Jacinta:  It is very difficult to describe; no artist could reproduce it.

P. Benac: ¿Qué aspecto tenía la Virgen y cómo vestía?

Jacinta: Su vestido era blanco, le llegaba hasta los pies, que no se veían y con un manto azul. Su vestido blanco tenía como flores bordadas en él que apenas se veían.

P. Benac: ¿Qué sentíais en su presencia?

Jacinta: Era muy feliz viéndola, como a una madre que nos quiere mucho; no la sentíamos lejana; nos sentíamos muy cerca de ella y la sentíamos muy cerca de nosotras.

 P. Benac: ¿Podías tocar o sentir su presencia?

Jacinta: Sí, pero es difícil de describir. Porque se tocaba sin sentir con el cuerpo pero sí con el alma. Es un cuerpo espiritual. Es como que la sentíamos con el alma y no con el cuerpo.

P. Benac: Lo que dices es como los cuerpos glorificados, materia espiritual que ocupa un espacio dimensional.

Jacinta: Sí, Padre, es como lo dice.

Fr. Benac:  What was the Virgin’s appearance like and how did she dress?

Jacinta:  Her dress was white, and it was so long that we didn’t see her feet.  She wore a blue mantle.  Her white dress had embroidered flowers that we almost couldn’t see.

Fr. Benac:  How did you feel in her presence?

Jacinta:  I was very happy to see her; she was like a mother who loves us very much; we didn’t feel that she was far from us.  We felt ourselves very close to her, and we felt her very close to us.

Fr. Benac:  Could you touch or feel her presence?

Jacinta:  Yes, but it is difficult to describe.  We could touch without feeling it bodily, but we felt it in our souls.  It is a spiritual body.  It is as though we felt with the soul and not with the body.

Fr. Benac:  What you are describing is like glorified bodies; spiritual material that occupies dimensional space.

Jacinta:  Yes, Father, it is as you say.

P. Benac: Es de notar que las otras videntes dicen lo mismo en este punto. Sobre el Escapulario: ¿era siempre visible durante las Apariciones? 

Jacinta: No estoy muy segura pero creo que siempre lo llevaba puesto. Era un Escapulario marrón, con una Cruz por un lado y algo como una montaña en el otro y el escapulario no muy grande, del tamaño de una mano.

P. Benac: ¿Cuánto duraba la Aparición?

Jacinta: Variaba mucho. Desde unos minutos a varias horas.

P. Benac: ¿Te sentías cansada cuando duraba mucho?

Jacinta: Oh no, Padre, el tiempo es como que no existía, el tiempo volaba.

Fr. Benac:  It is notable that the other seers say the same thing on this point.  About the Scapular:  was it always visible during the Apparitions?

Jacinta:  I am not sure, but I think she always wore it.  It was a brown Scapular, with a Cross on one side and something like a mountain on the other; the Scapular was not very large, about the size of a hand.

Fr. Benac:  How long did the Apparition last?

Jacinta:  That varied a lot, from a few minutes to several hours.

Fr. Benac:  Did you feel tired when it lasted a long time?

Jacinta:  Oh, no, Father, it was as though time didn’t exist; time flew.

P. Benac: ¿Estabas siempre en éxtasis con las otras?

Jacinta: Siempre fui con ellas; mientras ellas estaban en éxtasis, si yo estaba fuera, normal, me cansaba mucho siguiéndolas, pero si yo también estaba en éxtasis viendo a la Virgen estaba feliz y el tiempo volaba. 

P. Benac: Entonces a veces, ¿tú no estabas en éxtasis con las otras?

Jacinta: Exactamente, y esto me afectaba y me entristecía porque alguna vez estuvo la Virgen quince días y hasta dos meses sin aparecerse a mí.

P. Benac: ¿Por qué esta "discriminación"?

Jacinta: Sentía que era una especie de castigo por algunas travesuras o desobediencias. Nuestra Señora quería que fuésemos buenas y obedientes y que hiciésemos todo lo mejor que podíamos.

Fr. Benac:  Were you always in ecstasy with the others?

Jacinta:  I always went with them when they were in ecstasy.  If I was in the normal state, I grew very tired following them, but if I was also in ecstasy seeing the Virgin then I was happy and time flew.

Fr. Benac:  Then, sometimes you were not in ecstasy with the others?

Jacinta:  Exactly.  This affected me and made me sad because sometimes the Virgin went fifteen days and even two months without appearing to me.

Fr. Benac:  Why this “discrimination?”

Jacinta:  I felt that it was a type of punishment for mischief or disobedience.  Our Lady wanted us to be good and obedient and do the best we could.

P. Benac: Bien, Jacinta, si la Madre nos castiga, es porque nos ama mucho.

Jacinta: Sí Padre, eso es verdad.

P. Benac: Ahora, Jacinta, dinos acerca del Primer Mensaje y qué recuerdas de él. ¿Estabais las cuatro juntas en ese momento?

Jacinta: Sí, estábamos juntas; fue la Santísima Virgen quien nos dio este mensaje:

“Hay que hacer muchos sacrificios, mucha penitencia, visitar al Santísimo Sacramento, pero antes tenemos que ser muy buenos. La copa se está llenando y si no cambiamos vendrá un castigo muy grande.”

P. Benac: ¿Os urgió la Virgen dar a conocer el Mensaje?

Jacinta: Oh, sí. Ella nos dijo que lo diéramos a conocer al mundo, que lo dijésemos el 18 de Octubre (de 1961) para que la gente lo difundiese por todo el mundo. Ella también dijo que lo más importante era cumplir el mensaje.

Fr. Benac:  Well said, Jacinta, if the Mother punishes us, it is because She loves us so much.

Jacinta:  Yes, Father, that is true.

Fr. Benac:  Now, Jacinta, tell us about the First Message as you remember it.  Were the four of you together at that moment?

Jacinta: Yes, we were together.  The Most Holy Virgin gave us this message:

“It is necessary to make many sacrifices, do much penance, and to visit the Blessed Sacrament, but before all of this, we have to be very good.  The cup is filling up and if we do not change then a very great punishment will come.”

Fr. Benac:  Did the Virgin urge you to make the Message known?

Jacinta: Oh, yes.  She told us that we should tell the world, and that we should tell it on October 18, 1961 so that the people would spread it throughout the entire world.  She also said that the most important thing was to fulfill the message.

P. Benac: ¿Sabes por qué Nuestra Señora retrasó darlo a conocer hasta el dieciocho de Octubre?

Jacinta: No lo sé, pero quizás Ella quería que la gente conociese mejor las Apariciones antes de recibir los Mensajes.

P. Benac: ¿Cual fue la reacción de la gente?

Jacinta: El mismo día del mensaje la reacción fue mala porque la gente pensaba que iba a haber un Milagro. Fue un día de lluvia torrencial, un diluvio y la gente esperó en los Pinos; muchos quedaron desilusionados al no haber ningún milagro. De algún modo el milagro fue que no hubo accidentes, entre tantas dificultades para subir y andar por el pueblo. No se había anunciado ningún milagro. Ese día, solo había que dar a conocer el Mensaje.

P. Benac: ¿Como recibió tu familia las Apariciones?

Jacinta: ¡Qué paciencia tuvieron que tener! Recuerdo que mientras estaba en éxtasis con las otras, mis padres y mis hermanos no tenían paz, ni siquiera a la hora de comer, cuando la gente invadía nuestra pequeña casa. Aquellos años deben haber sido muy duros para ellos.

Fr. Benac: Do you know why Our Lady delayed making it known until October 18?

Jacinta:  No; I don’t know, but maybe She wanted the people to know more about the Apparitions before receiving the Messages.

Fr. Benac:  How did the people react?

Jacinta: On the same day the Message was given, the reaction was bad because the people thought that there was going to be a Miracle.  It was a day of torrential rain, a flood, and the people waited in the Pines.  Many of them were disillusioned when there was no miracle.  In a certain way, it was a miracle that there were no accidents since it was so difficult to ascend and walk throughout the village.  No miracle had been announced.  That day, we were only supposed to give the Message.

Fr. Benac:  How did your family receive the Apparitions?

Jacinta:  What patience they had to have!  I remember that while I was in ecstasy with the others, my parents and my siblings had no peace.  Even while they were eating, the people invaded our small house.  Those years had to be very difficult for them.

P. Benac: ¿Te sentías cansada después de las Apariciones?

Jacinta: ¡Oh, no! Muchas veces las Apariciones duraban hasta las cuatro de la mañana, pero no me cansaba nada, era muy feliz; y eso que me levantaba pocas horas después para ir al campo y traer alimento para los animales y hacer los otros trabajos de la casa. 

P. Benac: ¿Qué recuerdas del Padre Luis Andréu?

Jacinta: Le recuerdo muy bien porque era muy bueno, realmente era un santo. Loli y yo solíamos hablar mucho con él y nos acompañaba en los juegos. Lo que recuerdo más vivamente fue la última vez que visitó el pueblo y la Misa que dijo ese día. Todo el mundo decía:

─ “¡Qué Misa más hermosa dijo hoy el P. Luis; es un santo!” 

Su Misa fue como algo del otro mundo.

Fr. Benac:  Did you feel tired after the Apparitions?

Jacinta:  Oh, no!  Many times the Apparition lasted until four in the morning, but I was not tired at all, because I was very happy; even though I would get up a few hours later to go to the field to bring the animals food and do other house chores.

Fr. Benac:  What do you remember about Fr. Luís Andreu?

Jacinta:  I remember him very well because he was very good; he was a saint.  Loli and I would speak with him often and he would play games with us.  I remember his last visit to the village best, and the Mass he said that day.  Everyone said:

─ “What a beautiful Mass Fr. Luís said today!  He is a saint!”

His Mass was like something from another world.

P. Benac: ¿Cuando oíste de su muerte?

Jacinta: El día anterior jugó con nosotras y parecía estar muy bien. Imagínese la impresión que recibimos al día siguiente, cuando Loli, Conchita y yo, estábamos barriendo la Iglesia y lo supimos; la madre de Conchita vino a decirnos que se había muerto el Padre Luis. No nos lo podíamos creer.

P. Benac: ¿Oíste lo que el P. Andréu dijo al P. Marichalar antes de partir?

Jacinta: ¡Oh, sí! Le dijo que lo que las niñas dicen y ven es verdad y que ellas ven a Nuestra Señora.

P. Benac: ¿Es cierto que, antes de que muriese el P. Luis, la Virgen os había hablado de una voz que ibais a oír y que no os asustaseis?

Jacinta: Sí, nos lo dijo antes de morir el P. Luis.

P. Benac: Entendemos que Nuestra Señora os anunciaba que el P. Luis vendría con Ella un día, que os hablaría y que no os asustaseis.

Jacinta: Sí, el P. Luis vino, no le veíamos pero nos habló y nos dio un mensaje para su hermano el P. Ramón. También dijo algunas frases en varias lenguas y nos enseñó el Ave María en Griego.

Fr. Benac:  When did you hear about his death?

Jacinta:  The day before he had been playing with us and he seemed very well.  Imagine the impression when we received the news the next day.  Loli, Conchita, and I were sweeping the Church when we found out.  Conchita’s mother came to tell us that Fr. Luís had died.  We couldn’t believe it.

Fr. Benac:  Did you hear what Fr. Andreu said to Fr. Marichalar before he died?

Jacinta:  Oh, yes!  He said that what the girls say and see is true and that they see Our Lady.

Fr. Benac:  It is true that before Fr. Luís died, the Virgin had spoken to you of a voice that you were going to hear and shouldn’t fear?

Jacinta:  Yes, She told us this before Fr. Luís died.

Fr. Benac:  We understand that Our Lady announced that Fr. Luís would come with Her one day, that he would speak with you and that you shouldn’t be afraid.

Jacinta:  Yes, Fr. Luís came; we didn’t see him but he spoke to us and he gave us a message for his brother, Fr. Ramón.  He also said some things in other languages and taught us the Hail Mary in Greek.

P. Benac: ¿Recuerdas todavía el Ave María en Griego?

Jacinta: Esto es lo que recuerdo:

─ Haire Maria, Keharitomene, O Kirios Metasu eulognemene...

P. Benac: ¿Te habló la Virgen acerca del futuro de tu vida?

Jacinta: No, nunca; a pesar de que muchas veces le dije que quería ser monja, Ella no me contestó.

P. Benac: ¿Podías decirme por qué no te contestó?

Jacinta: Pienso que quizás quiso que, en conciencia, eligiésemos libremente.

P. Benac: ¿Sentiste la llamada a la vida religiosa?

Jacinta: Con frecuencia deseaba ser una monja Carmelita. Mi padre no se opuso a este deseo. Yo pensaba irme a los 17 años. Mi padre deseaba que conociese bien la vida en el mundo y la vida religiosa antes de elegir. Visité el convento y me di cuenta que no era aquel mi sitio. No tenía esa vocación.

Fr. Benac:  Do you still remember the Hail Mary in Greek?

Jacinta:  This is what I remember:

─ “Haire Maria, Keharitomene, O Kirios Metasu eulognemene...”

Fr. Benac:  Did the Virgin speak to you about your future?

Jacinta:  No, never.  Even thought I told Her many times that I wanted to be a nun, She never answered me.

Fr. Benac:  Can you tell me why She didn’t answer you?

Jacinta:  I think it was because she wanted us to choose freely according to our consciences.

Fr. Benac:  Did you feel the call to religious life?

Jacinta:  Frequently, I wanted to be a Carmelite nun.  My father did not oppose this.  I wanted to go when I was seventeen years old.  My father wanted me to know a life in the world and the religious life before I chose.  I visited a convent, and I realized that my place was not there.  I didn’t have that vocation.

P. Benac: ¿Puedes decirme algo acerca de las "llamadas" que tuvísteis las cuatro?

Jacinta: Sí, era una vivencia interior; la primera como una alegría muy suave, la segunda, como cuando ya se espera ansiosamente a álguien muy querido y cuando venía la tercera llamada, a veces después de una o dos horas desde la primera, ya no resistíamos más; la Virgen nos atraía de un modo que dejábamos todo y corríamos a su encuentro.

P. Benac: ¿Sucedía cuando estabas sola?

Jacinta: Las llamadas venían de repente, en cualquier momento, a veces la tercera llamada venía al día siguiente.

Fr. Benac:  Can you tell me something about the “calls” the four of you had?

Jacinta:  Yes.  It was an interior experience.  The first was like a very soft joy, the second was as if waiting anxiously for someone who is very dear and when the third call came, sometimes it was an hour or two after the first call, we could not resist anymore.  The Virgin attracted us in a way that made us drop everything and run to her.

Fr. Benac:  Did this happen when you were alone?

Jacinta:  The calls came suddenly, at any moment; sometimes the third call came the next day.

P. Benac: ¿Qué recuerdas de la Comisión?

Jacinta: Fué mi padre quien habló con ellos. Vinieron a casa sobre las cuatro de la madrugada y le pidieron a mi padre ir a casa de Mari Loli para reunirse con su padre, Ceferino. Entre la gente de la comisión estaban el Doctor Piñal, el P. Francisco Odriozola y otros que no recuerdo.

Dijeron a mi padre:

─ Hemos estado observando a las niñas y creemos que deben ser llevadas fuera del pueblo porque ellas no podrán resistir la tensión debida al creciente número de visitantes que viene. Por esto creemos que sería mejor llevarlas a la capital, Santander. Cubriremos todos los gastos escolares de las cuatro y nos gustaría llevar a su hija a Santander.

Mi padre les preguntó:

─ ¿Por qué mi hija?

“Si lo que mi hija necesita es estar en paz y tranquila, me la llevaré a las alturas de Peña Sagra.” Mi padre les dijo que su hija quedaría en casa. Entonces fueron a casa de Conchita. No sé lo que sucedió allí pero finalmente la llevaron a Santander.

Fr. Benac:  What do you remember about the Commission?

Jacinta:  My father spoke with them.  They came to the house at about four in the morning and asked my father to go to Mari Loli’s house for a meeting with her father, Ceferino.  Dr. Piñal, Fr. Francisco Odriozola, and others I don’t remember were on the Commission.

They said to my father:

─ “We have been observing the girls and we believe that they should be taken from the village since they can’t resist the tension of the many visitors who come.  We believe that it would be better to bring them to the capital, Santander.  We will cover all of the school fees for the four girls; we would like to take your daughter to Santander.”

My father asked them:

─ “Why my daughter?”

“If what my daughter needs is peace and tranquility, I will take her to the top of Peña Sagra.”  My father told them that his daughter would stay at home.  Then they went to Conchita’s house.  I don’t know what happened there, but they finally took her to Santander.

P. Benac: ¿Cuando conociste al Obispo de Santander, Juan Antonio del Val?

Jacinta: Recuerdo haberle visto por primera vez en una recepción, cuando los fieles le presentaban sus respetos. Yo estaba en la Catedral esperando saludarle. Don Bernardo, nuestro párroco, me vio y me preguntó:

─ “¿Quieres saludar al Obispo?”

Le dije:

─ No, por favor. Me avergonzaría si me dijese que me fuera.

─ “Bien, voy a decirle quién eres.”

 Entonces, cuando llegué donde el Obispo, Don Bernardo le dijo al oído:

─ “Esta es Jacinta de Garabandal.”

Fr. Benac:  When did you meet the Bishop of Santander, Juan Antonio del Val?

Jacinta:  I remember seeing him for the first time at a reception, when the faithful paid him respects.  I was in the Cathedral waiting to greet him.  Don Bernardo, our pastor, saw me and said:

─ “Do you want to greet the Bishop?”

I said:

─ “No, please.  I would be ashamed if he would ask me to leave.”

─ “Well, I will tell him who you are.”

Then when we arrived to where the Bishop was, Fr. Bernardo whispered to his ear:

─ “This is Jacinta of Garabandal.”

El Obispo exclamó:

 ─ “¿Qué me dices?”

Entonces, un sacerdote que estaba al lado dijo:

─ “Que se vaya, que se vaya.”

Pero el Obispo me cogió la mano y dijo:

─ No, no, quédate. Esto es algo que me interesa.

Entonces me dijo que le gustaría verme de nuevo. Desde entonces fuimos amigos y siempre ha sido muy bueno conmigo.

The Bishop exclaimed:

─ “What are you telling me?”

Then, a priest who was at his side said:

─ “She should leave, She should go.”

But the Bishop took me by the hand and said:

─ “No, no, stay.  This interests me.”

Then he told me that he would like to see me again.  From that time on, we were friends, and he has always been good to me.

P. Benac: Me dijiste que fuiste a Roma, ¿cuándo?

Jacinta: Fui a Roma en una peregrinación para ganar las indulgencias del Año Santo.

P. Benac: Pero creo que tuviste permiso para ver a algunos miembros de la Sagrada Congregación.

Jacinta: Sí. El Cardenal Ottaviani me dijo que él creía en Garabandal pero que teníamos que tener mucha paciencia y rezar mucho. Él me recibió. El Cardenal Philippe también me recibió.

Cuando llamé a su oficina, él estaba presidiendo una conferencia de Obispos. Su secretario le dijo que yo quería verle, y es de destacar que él dejó la habitación de la conferencia y vino a hablar conmigo unos cinco minutos. Me dijo:

─ “Te traigo bendiciones de la Madonna.”

El P. Benoit Duroux, su secretario, me aconsejó vivamente que nosotras, las cuatro, mantuviésemos una estrecha relación y comunicación entre nosotras. Esta observación me impresionó mucho.

Fr. Benac:  You told me that you went to Rome; when was that?

Jacinta:  I went to Rome on a pilgrimage to get indulgences for the Holy Year.

Fr. Benac:  I believe you had permission to see some members of the Holy Congregation.

Jacinta:  Yes.  Cardinal Ottaviani told me that he believed in Garabandal but that we had to have patience and pray often.  He received me.  Cardinal Philippe also received me.

When I called his office, he was presiding over a conference of Bishops.  His secretary told him that I wanted to see him, it must be stressed that he left the conference room and came to speak with me for five minutes.  He said:

─ “I bring you blessings from Our Lady.”

Fr. Benoit Duroux, his secretary, advised me that the four of us should maintain a close relationship and communicate among ourselves.  This observation impressed me very much.

P. Benac: En Roma, ¿a quién más visitaste, además de los Cardenales?

Jacinta: Me presentaron a algunos miembros de la Sagrada Congregación que estaban sentados alrededor de una gran mesa y empezaron a hacerme preguntas.

Cuando me preguntaron por qué había venido, qué es lo que quería:

Les dije:

─ “Que se dé plena libertad en el pueblo para decir la Santa Misa.”

Me dijeron que era lo correcto.

Por causa de que no había permiso para los sacerdotes de fuera de decir en el pueblo la Santa Misa, nosotros estábamos privados durante cuatro dias a la semana de la Santa Misa y de la Comunión.

Los miembros de la Sagrada Congregación asintieron a mi pedido, pero me dijeron que era el Obispo de Santander quien lo tendría que autorizar. Ellos dijeron que este asunto de la Santa Misa era muy importante pero que debíamos tener mucha paciencia.

Fr. Benac:  Who else did you visit in Rome, besides the Cardinals?

Jacinta:  They presented me to some members of the Holy Congregation who were sitting around a large table, and they asked me questions.

When they asked me why I had come, and what I wanted:

I told them:

─ “Fullness of freedom for priests to say Holy Mass in the village.”

They told me that this was the correct thing.

Since priests from out of town did not have permission to say Holy Mass in the village, we were deprived of Mass or Holy Communion four days of the week.

The members of the Holy Congregation assented to my request, but they told me that it was the Bishop of Santander who had to authorize it.  They said that this matter of the Holy Mass was very important but that we should have patience.

P. Benac: De vuelta en España, ¿hablaste de esto con el Obispo del Val?

Jacinta: Sí, y estuve desconcertada por su respuesta porque me dijo que este asunto concernía a Roma. Entonces le dije:

─ “Ahora que Roma me envía a usted, usted me envía de nuevo a Roma.”

Y le repetí lo que me dijeron. Que los sacerdotes que quisieran decir Misa en el pueblo podrían hacerlo con su autorización.

Fr. Benac:  When you returned to Spain, did you speak with Bishop del Val?

Jacinta:  Yes, and I was disconcerted by his response because he told me that this matter concerned Rome.  Then I said to him:

─ “Now that Rome sends me to you, you send me back to Rome.”

I repeated to him what they had told me:  that priests who wanted to say Mass in the village could do so with his authorization.

P. Benac: En muchos libros sobre Garabandal se habla de las "noches de los gritos". ¿Qué recuerdas de esto?

 Jacinta: Recuerdo que estábamos Mari Loli y yo solas. Era la víspera del Corpus Christi; por causa de lo que veíamos empezamos a gritar.

Nos preguntábamos cómo iríamos a confesar estando ausente el P. Valentín Marichalar, el párroco. Pensábamos que no íbamos a tener Misa el día del Corpus Christi, cuando sucedió que, un sacerdote de fuera, después de perder su ruta, vino al pueblo y todos pudieron confesarse con él.

A la mañana siguiente, fiesta del Corpus Christi, dijo la Santa Misa y aquellos que comulgaron, especialmente los hombres, lloraban cuando volvían a sus asientos. 

Fr. Benac:  In many books about Garabandal they talk about “the night of the screams.”  What do you remember about this?

Jacinta:  I remember that Mari Loli and I were alone.  It was the night before Corpus Christi.  We screamed because of what we saw.

We asked ourselves how we could confess if Fr. Valentín, the pastor, was absent.  We thought that we could not have Mass on Corpus Christi, but it happened that an out-of-town priest, after losing his route, came to the village, and we could all confess to him.

The next morning, the feast of Corpus Christi, he said Holy Mass and the people who received the Sacrament were crying as they were returning to their seats, especially the men.

P. Benac: Tengo entendido que tú también escribiste tu propio diario, ¿es así?

Jacinta: Sí, Padre, pero no me gustaría darlo a conocer porque todo es muy personal. Quizás, cuando yo muera, pueda ser útil.

P. Benac: ¿Qué recuerdos tienes del Aviso profetizado por Nuestra Señora?

Jacinta: Será algo que afectará al mundo entero; nos ayudará a ver las buenas y malas acciones que hayamos hecho. Durará poco tiempo.

En este momento llega a casa Jeff, el esposo de Jacinta.

Fr. Benac:  I understand that you also wrote your own diary; is that true?

Jacinta:  Yes, Father, but I don’t like to make it known because it is very personal.  Maybe when I die it will be useful.

Fr. Benac:  What memories do you have about the Warning that was prophesized by Our Lady?

Jacinta:  It will be something that affects the entire world; it will help us to see the good and bad actions that we have done.  It will last a short time.

At that moment, Jeff, Jacinta’s husband, arrived at home.

Jeff: Todos recordamos que Nuestra Señora dijo que el Aviso viene antes del Milagro; que el Milagro sucederá dentro de los doce meses siguientes al Aviso. Viene de Dios y nos purificará. Conchita dijo que se verá también en el cielo y que en ese momento todo se parará, incluso los aviones. Causará pánico, y nos mostrará a cada uno nuestra vida pasada, el estado de nuestra alma ante Dios.

P. Benac: Parece que el propósito del Aviso es ayudarnos a comprender el significado de las palabras proféticas de Nuestra Señora a través de sus Mensajes.

Jacinta:  Sí, en especial me recuerdo lo que Nuestra Señora dijo sobre la Eucaristía, la poca importancia que se le dá y la falta de respeto ante la Presencia Divina. De igual modo la pérdida del sentido del pecado.

P. Benac: Solo Conchita recibió el segundo Mensaje. ¿Sabes por qué las demás no estaban allí con ella?

Jacinta: No lo sé; en ese tiempo nosotras ya no teníamos apariciones. El segundo Mensaje fue el 18 de Junio de 1965.

Jeff:  We all remember that Our Lady said that the Warning will come before the Miracle, and that the Miracle will happen in the twelve months after the Warning.  It will come from God and it will purify us.  Conchita said that it will be seen in the sky and in that moment everything will stop, including planes.  It will cause panic, and each person will be shown their past life, and the state of their souls before God.

Fr. Benac:  It seems that the purpose of this Warning is to help us to understand the meaning of the prophetic words of Our Lady through her Messages.

Jacinta:  Yes.  I especially remember what Our Lady said about the Eucharist, and the little importance it is given and the lack of respect shown to the Divine Presence.  Similarly, she mentioned the loss of the sense of sin.

Fr. Benac:  Only Conchita received the second Message.  Do you know why the rest of you were not there with her?

Jacinta:  I don’t know.  We no longer had Apparitions by this time.  The second Message was on June 18, 1965.

P. Benac: Pero vosotras aún teníais Locuciones.

Jacinta: Las otras sí las tuvieron pero yo no.

P. Benac: ¿Estabas tú en éxtasis cuando recibió Conchita el último Mensaje?

Jacinta: No, yo estaba entre la gente. En esa fecha ya no tenía apariciones.

P. Benac: ¿Has visto alguna cosa inusual?

Jacinta: Sí; recuerdo ver venir una luz en el cielo hacia el lugar de la Aparición y que otros también vieron esa luz.

P. Benac: ¿Qué nos puedes decir del Milagro?

Jacinta: Todo lo que sé, está escrito en los libros. Conchita es la única a quien la Santísima Virgen reveló el año y el día del Milagro. Yo pedí varias veces a la Virgen que hiciese un milagro para que la gente creyese. Ella nunca me dijo nada acerca del Milagro. Mari Loli también sabe muchos detalles del Aviso.

Fr. Benac:  But you were having Locutions at that time.

Jacinta:  The others had them, but I did not.

Fr. Benac:  Were you in ecstasy when Conchita received the last Message?

Jacinta:  No, I was among the people.  I no longer was having Apparitions by the time this date came.

Fr. Benac:  Have you seen anything unusual?

Jacinta:  Yes, I remember seeing a light come from the sky toward the place of the Apparition; others saw this light as well.

Fr. Benac:  What can you tell us about the Miracle?

Jacinta:  All I know is written in the books.  Conchita is the only one to whom the Most Holy Virgin revealed the year and the day of the Miracle.  I asked the Virgin to perform a Miracle so that the people would believe many times.  She never told me anything about the Miracle.  Mari Loli knows many details about the Warning also.

P. Benac: ¿Recuerdas lo que Nuestra Señora te dijo del Castigo?

Jacinta: Ella dijo que dependerá del comportamiento de la humanidad. Dijo que será algo terrible si no cambiamos.

P. Benac: ¿Piensas que podría ser una guerra atómica?

Jacinta: No, no, será algo que viene directamente de Dios. Son los hombres los que causan las guerras.

P. Benac: Me imagino que ese mismo pensamiento es el que motivó a Conchita para decirme en una carta que me escribió:

─ “El que las Apariciones son verdaderas o falsas, los hombres no pueden probarlo; será Dios solamente quien lo hará.”

Fr. Benac:  Do you remember what Our Lady told you about the Chastisement?

Jacinta:  She said that it would depend upon humanity’s behavior.  She said that it would be something terrible if we did not change.

Fr. Benac:  Do you think it could be an atomic war?

Jacinta:  No, no.  It will be something that comes directly from God.  Men cause wars.

Fr. Benac:  I imagine that this is the same thought that motivated Conchita when she wrote me in a letter:

─ “Whether the Apparitions are true or false is not something men can prove; only God will prove it.”

Jeff: Dios Nuestro Señor ya ha dado muchas pruebas que están escritas en los libros, y además, los prodigios que vieron los testigos, las curaciones milagrosas, las conversiones, etc.

P. Benac: ¡Que Dios os bendiga, Jacinta y Jeff!, porque estáis  estrechamente asociados a la Obra de Nuestra Señora por la salvación del mundo.

Ahora unas palabras para los trabajadores de Nuestra Señora en la India:

Jeff: Os admiro, queridos trabajadores de nuestra Señora en la India, por el maravilloso trabajo que hacéis extendiendo el Mensaje por todo el país. Estoy seguro que Nuestra Señora os recompensará de todos vuestros esfuerzos, que son para Gloria de Dios.

Jeff:  God Our Lord has already given plenty of proofs that written in the books, and also through the prodigies seen by witnesses:  the miraculous healings, the conversions, etc.

Fr. Benac:  May God bless you, Jacinta and Jeff, because you are associated with the Work of Our Lady for the salvation of the world.

Now some words for Our Lady’s workers in India:

Jeff:  I admire you, dear workers of Our Lady in India, because of your marvelous work you do, spreading the Message through the entire country.  I am sure that Our Lady will reward you for your efforts, because they are for the Glory of God.
