Las Apariciones de la Virgen María en San Sebastián de Garabandal

050 Madre Teresa de Calcuta y Garabandal

The Apparitions of the Virgin Mary in San Sebastián de Garabandal

050 Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Garabandal

The interview with Mother Teresa was providential in order to obtain
permission to make the documentary by BBC.

Dice Madre Teresa:

Mother Teresa says:

I am Albanian by birth, but a citizen of India.  I am a Catholic nun by faith.  In my vocation I belong to the world.  In my heart, I belong completely to the Heart of Jesus.

Jesus revealed the desire of his heart to find “victims of love” who would radiate his love to the souls.  “Come and know my light,” Jesus asked.

Jesus said:  “I cannot go alone.”   He revealed that he was pained that the poor were forgotten, his sadness as a result of the ignorance that they had of Him and the desire to be loved by them.  He asked Mother Teresa to found a religious order, the Missionaries of Charity, who would be dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor.

Conchita and Mother Teresa of Calcutta

In an interview, Monsignor Francisco Garmendia asked Conchita about the BBC movie and Mother Teresa’s intervention:

Francisco Garmendia, FG:  The last interview we had here with Gladys, she spoke about BBC of London, who filmed you here in New York about the history of the Apparitions and I believe that they were excited for many reasons and truly convinced of the reality of it.

Are they going to show this film in New York?

Conchita:  Yes, Channel 13 is going to show it, and Channel 17 requested it as well.

FG:  Have they had any contact with you?

Conchita:  Yes, Channel 13 came to my house the other day.

Conchita: Sí, me ofrecieron.

FG:  So this helps you; it gives you the economic means to resolve many problems that present themselves to you.  You have four children, and I imagine it is a great help in your life to be on television.

Conchita:  Thank God I do not need that money and I will never take a cent for any work I do for the Virgin.

FG: So Conchita, you really have not taken even a cent?  They offered you money, I’m sure?

Conchita:  Yes, they offered it to me.

FG:  Have they shown any part of this film here in New York?

Conchita:  BBC is showing it everywhere now.  They sold around four hundred films here for different stations.

FG: Yo he visto esa película y pareces muy

FG:  It is already going throughout the entire world.

Conchita:  Yes.

FG:  I have seen this film and you seem very…

Conchita:  Sad and ugly.

FG:  Ugly as well?

Conchita:  I think that the Virgin wanted it to be that way.

FG:  The Virgin wanted you to be humbled?

Conchita:  I think so, because everything I did for this film was a sacrifice, and I did it because it was right for the love of God, because I did not want to do it for any human reason.

For me, it was not convenient for any motive, because I didn’t want anyone to know who I was, and I thought they were going to put it on television right away.  I also didn’t want to do it because it was summertime and I didn’t want to be with those people.

Conchita: No.

FG:  So you are anonymous here.  No one knows who you are here?

Conchita:  No.

FG:  And you don’t want people to know?

Conchita:  No, this doesn’t interest me and I don’t want it.  Maybe it’s selfishness, but I don’t want it.

FG:  So when you appear on Channels 13 and 17. This film is going to remove the veil.

Conchita:  I don’t think people are going to know me when they see me.  I was sad because I was also nervous.  I was not nervous about the movie, but because I had to talk with someone before the movie and I could not talk with her; she is a very important person to me.  But God made it this way so I wouldn’t be vain.

FG: Dios tiene sus caminos.

Pasando a otro punto.

FG: ¿En qué oportunidades has tenido tú?

FG:  God has his ways.

Passing to another point — do you know Mother Teresa of Calcutta?

Conchita:  Yes, I know her.

FG:  What opportunities have you had to know her?

Conchita:  I see her each time she comes to this country.

FG:  So, she visits you.

Conchita:  I visit her.

FG:  You visit her.  Without a doubt, she is very busy.  What kind of impression do you have of her?

Conchita:  She is a holy woman, full of charity and love.  Whenever I see her, it is as though she loves me and supports me.  Once she called to ask me about the Apparitions; I believe it was the first year I came to this country.

I told her that the Bishop of Santander had prohibited me from speaking but if she wanted, I would speak to her about it.  Then she said to me:  “no, if the Bishop told you not to say anything, leave it as it is. This is enough for me.”

FG: Así que ella te apoya.

Conchita: Si.

Conchita: Una santa.

FG: So she supports you.

Conchita:  Yes.  But I spoke with the Bishop of Santander, and that is why I am doing this interview.  I wrote to the Bishop of Santander with Dr. Domínguez and I told him that I wanted him to tell me clearly whether or not I could speak, that I was talking a little, but for example, I had made a film and talked little and he told me to continue like this.

So, until now, I have talked like this once in a while.

FG:  So Mother Teresa, and you, are following the Bishop’s orders and doing what the Church says.

So Mother Teresa told you that if the Bishop does not permit it, we should not commit ourselves.  Concerning the rest, she does seem to you like a woman who is truly dedicated to the poor.

Conchita: She is a saint.

Permission to do a Documentary on BBC, a Meeting with Mother Teresa

During the autumn of 1980, the British Broadcasting Company, with the insistence of the Garabandal Center of London and with the support of Joey Lomangino, produced a documentary about Garabandal.  The result was a film that was 32 minutes long which has already won an award and has already spread internationally.

The History of the Events and Meeting with Mother Teresa:

At the end of the 1970s, Bill Nicholson, director of Religious Programming for BBC London, saw an interview filmed with Conchita of Garabandal in the early 1970s.  This interview impressed him greatly, and he decided to make a film about Garabandal, which would also center on an interview with Conchita.

His first job was to obtain consent from Conchita for the interview.  Since Joey Lomangino, founder of “The Workers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,” was a personal friend of Conchita’s, Nicholson called Joey and asked for his help to convince Conchita to agree to the interview.  Joey saw the importance a movie made by BBC would have for the diffusion of the Message of Our Lady, and was enthusiastic and agreed to help any way he could.

Joey explained to Conchita the importance of making this film, and how much good it could do to diffuse the message.  Conchita was open to the proposal, but she wouldn’t do anything without the permission of the Bishop of Santander, Juan Antonio del Val Gallo.

Bishop del Val was the fifth bishop of Santander since the beginning of the Apparitions.  When Conchita called him to ask permission to make the movie, he responded:

Be humble, be obedient, and don’t talk too much about the previous Bishops.

Conchita understood what the Bishop said and thus he was giving her his consent.  She informed Joey of this.  He notified Bill Nicholson, who began to plan production.

In June of 1980, Nicholson flew from London to New York to meet with Conchita and Joey, who was also going to appear in the film, to review the locations of the film with them.

He also wanted to see the possible sites for the filming sequences:  the supermarket in the neighborhood, the pizza shop which in those days was owned and operated by Conchita’s husband, Pat (Patrick); the beach that Conchita used to take her children to; the place where Joey worked and the Garabandal Center in New York.

He was also looking for a good place for Conchita’s interview.  His idea was to choose a place where the skyscrapers of Manhattan could be seen in the background to suggest the worldly dimension of the Messages and Prophecies of Garabandal.  If such place was not available near where Conchita was living, then the interview would be in her house.

In August of 1980, Bill Nicholson returned for the filming.  BBC sent specialized personnel to film the movie in New York and each one was assigned to his own work.

Barry Hanratty was one of the collaborators:

Dice Barry Hanratty:

Barry Hanratty says:

My role in all of this was to be Bill Nicholson’s chauffer.  We rented a car so that I could bring him to all of the places he needed to go.

The filming of the interview with Conchita was scheduled, and Nicholson had one last preparatory meeting with her.  We arrived at her house, and after reviewing the activities for the next day, Conchita mentioned that her friend, Dr. Jerónimo Domínguez, and his wife, Gladys, lived in an area of the Bronx and that maybe the buildings of Manhattan could be made out from their property, in which case it would be the ideal site for the interview that Nicholson had originally agreed to.  He suggested that we go to see it and Conchita and her four children got in the car with us and we embarked on the trip.

Gladys greeted us the moment we arrived and Bill Nicholson rapidly investigated the place.  Soon it became clear that the place was unsuitable for the interview because of the strong wind, which affected the microphones and also, the skyline of Manhattan could not been seen from there.  The interview would have to take place in Conchita’s house as had been planned.

While we were preparing to leave and return to Conchita’s house, Gladys suggested that we stop at the Convent of the Missionaries of Charity, in the south Bronx, and we could ask the sisters to pray for the intentions of the movie, which was to spread the Apparitions and the Messages of the Virgin of Garabandal.  Nicholson had no objection, and Gladys got into the car with Conchita, her four children, Bill Nicholson, and I.  This car was a medium-sized Ford.  Conchita’s children were little at that time.

The south Bronx had one of the highest rates of criminal activity in all of the city of New York, and the convent of the Missionaries of Charity was situated in an area where there were many run-down, abandoned buildings.

We arrived at the front of the convent and we parked at the opposite side of road.  The little sisters were very happy to see Conchita since they already knew her.  She and her husband, Patrick worked in the public dining room, which was managed by the convent.

Conchita has her first daughter, “Conchitina,” in her arms.

In the middle of speaking with the Sisters, we separated into two groups.  Bill Nicholson and three of Conchita’s children went into the vestibule with some nuns while Conchita, her daughter Miriam, Gladys and I were with the Mother Superior in a small room, separate from the vestibule.

A little time had passed when the door of the vestibule that led to the convent opened, and to our surprise:  Mother Teresa was walking towards us.

We didn’t have any idea that Mother Teresa was there.  Mother Teresa came to New York to visit the convents of her Order (there are three), and she was staying in this convent that was a contemplative one.

Mother Teresa gave us a warm greeting, especially to Conchita, since they were already friends.  She asked the purpose for our visit and Conchita said that she was going to participate in a film about Garabandal.

The Mother, with a profound sense of obedience, immediately responded:

“What did the Bishop of Santander say about this?”

Conchita tried to explain it to her, but it became a little difficult for her to explain the Bishop’s response.  Mother Teresa was a very direct person with a lot of common sense and she saw things very clearly, as black or white.

Since the Bishop’s response to Conchita was somewhat indirect, although Conchita knew that he had given his permission, the Mother was not convinced and she said:

“You have waited so much time, that maybe you should wait a little longer.”

The Mother Superior, who was behind her, supported the idea and said:

“Yes, cancel the filming, cancel it!”

I had the terrible sensation, that this entire beautiful project was at the point of turning into smoke in the air, and I said:

Yes, but sister, (in my confusion I called Mother Teresa ‘sister,’) he is not really her Bishop.

This could have some validity since Conchita lived in the Diocese of Brooklyn, but the Mother, who had very high intelligence, told me:

“It happened there.”

She meant to signify that the Apparitions took place in the Diocese of Santander.

Case closed:  I was not about to argue with a saint.  Bill Nicholson was outside the vestibule and he did not have the least idea of what was happening a few meters away in this small room.

There was a moment of silence and then Mother Teresa said to Conchita:

“You should ask the Bishop again.”

Conchita replied:

“What should I say to him?”

The Mother answered:

“You should ask him if you can do this for the Honor and the Glory of God and not for any other reason.”

Conchita then asked Mother Teresa to write the words for her.  She gave the Mother a pen and a white envelope on which she wrote the words that Conchita should say to the Bishop.

Our visit ended and Mother Teresa invited us to the Chapel to be a few moments with the Blessed Sacrament before leaving.  The Mother knelt on the ground, not far from the door.

The Missionaries of Charity did not have kneelers in the chapels of their convents.  Mother Teresa was there with her eyes fixed on the tabernacle when we left the Chapel and surely she had been there, in her conversation with Our Lord, when we arrived.

Gladys returned with us to Conchita’s house.  Although it was already a little late in the afternoon, this meant that it was nighttime in Spain, because of the six hours of time difference.  Conchita was determined to call the bishop immediately.

Someone answered in the diocese’s office.  The bishop was not there; he was on vacation.  They gave Conchita the number where he could be reached.  She was going to call him at 9:00 the following morning.  The filming was scheduled to begin the following day, but if the Bishop said no, it would be cancelled immediately.

Conchita would not make the movie unless the Bishop gave his consent.  Although Bill Nicholson knew that the movie depended on what the Bishop told Conchita, he was dedicated to proceeding with the plan.

Although he was still relatively young at 33 years old, Bill Nicholson had already made more than thirty films, and he knew the inherent risks in a job like this one.  We were to meet with the filming crew the following morning at 10:00 exactly in front of Conchita’s house.

Nicholson wanted to arrive before ten and wait for the personnel, but even though we arrived early, they were already parked in front of Conchita’s house in two cars:  the camera man, his assistant, and the sound tech in one; the light crew in another.  Conchita greeted us at the door and we all entered.

Immediately, we learned from Conchita that she had called the Bishop, but she had not been able to speak with him and she had to call again at 4:00 in the afternoon.  The program would continue during that time.  We would wait and see.

When the lunch hour arrived, the personnel from BBC went to eat at a nearby restaurant.  Bill Nicholson and I stayed at Conchita’s house.

After lunch, she told us that she’d had a dream the night before.  In this dream, she was walking down a street where there was a restaurant.  There were four men sitting by the window of the restaurant.

They called to her and said:

“We are the ones who are making the movie for BBC.”

Conchita continued telling that when she woke up this morning, she went in front of the house, and looking out the window she saw the four men from her dream in the two parked cars.

When the moment arrived for Conchita’s interview, Bill Nicholson told everyone to go to the first floor of the house, where the interview would be done.  Only he and a film crew stayed there; it was so that there would be no distractions.  Then Pat Keena (Patrick Keena) was already in the house after work, and Dr. Domínguez and Gladys Domínguez were also present.  They all went upstairs or to another part of the house until the filming was done.

The interview ended at about 3:30.  Nicholson was very happy with the way it had gone.   At that point, we were all reunited in the first floor of the house:  Conchita, Pat, Dr. Domínguez, Gladys, Bill Nicholson, the crew, and I.

4:00 came quickly; the moment of truth.  Would there be a movie or would all of the day’s work be for discarded?

Conchita took the phone and dialed Bishop del Val’s number.  She had the message that Mother Teresa had given her in her hands.

Gladys was near Conchita, ready to give the good news or the bad news.  The communication was established and Conchita was speaking with the Bishop of Santander:

“Mother Teresa wanted me to ask you if I should make this documentary.  She told me to ask you if I could make it for the Honor and Glory of God, and for no other reason.”

The Bishop responded:

“Of course you can make the movie for that reason.”

Conchita continued speaking with the Bishop, and Gladys could overhear what the response had been in this conversation.  A great smile illuminated her face and we all knew it had been worth it.

We waited until Conchita had put down the phone.  Everyone was happy, especially Bill Nicholson.

Bishop del Val admired the work Mother Teresa of Calcutta and after Conchita finished reading the message, he responded:

“Of course you can make the movie for that reason.”

He also asked Conchita to send him the message written by Mother Teresa so he could keep it as a memento; Conchita did so.

Before Mother Teresa left New York, she called Conchita and told her that she had been praying for the intentions of the movie for the Glory of God.  This, by itself, made it all worthwhile.

In December of 1980, BBC showed the movie on television through their “Everyman” series.  It had enormous success and surpassed all expectations, reaching a considerable audience in the United Kingdom and Ireland, which was considered very good for the 10:30p.m. television slot.

Immediately after this transmission, BBC had an avalanche of calls requesting more information.  Some were already familiar with Nicholson’s work and thought that this was his best film yet.

He himself said that he felt something special when he was doing it.  In view of the petitions of the audience, the movie was shown twice more in the UK and for a third time in Ireland, and it won an award for the best religious picture made by BBC that year.

It was the first time that the events of Garabandal were made known through this important means of communication and it was an important milestone in the diffusion of the Messages of Garabandal in the English speaking world.

Mother Teresa was convinced of the truth of the Apparitions of Garabandal, although she always responded with filial obedience to whatever the Church said at the time.

Besides being a friend of Conchita’s, the Mother also met Mari Loli in New York, and while she was recovering from an illness in southern California, she asked that Jacinta, another seer, come to visit her.

If people as holy as Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Padre Pio of Pietrelcina believe in these Apparitions, it says a lot about the importance of these Apparitions, especially about the important prophecies that are about to be fulfilled and so that all of us comply with the urgency of the Messages.

Monsignor Juan Antonio del Val, in addition to giving permission for the movie made by BBC, made a personal investigation for several years about the Apparitions of Garabandal and is one of the witnesses on the video, “Garabandal, the Eyewitnesses,” produced by Michael Tubberty and published in more that thirty languages by Monsignor Roman Danylak, titular Bishop of Nyssa, Rome, Italy.  (January 24, 2000).

Monsignor del Val testifies that the findings of the investigation of the Apparitions of the Most Holy Virgin Mary in Garabandal were sent to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; more specifically, to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.
