Durante
las Apariciones, D. Juan Álvarez Seco fué brigada de la Guardia Civil, jefe de
la sección de Puentenansa, demarcación a la que pertenece San Sebastián de
Garabandal.
Testimony of Mr. Juan Alvarez Seco.
First Part.
During the Apparitions, Mr. Juan Alvarez Seco was a brigadier of the Civil Guard, the head of the section in Puentenansa, a demarcation that San Sebastián de Garabandal belongs to.

Cuando
estaba próximo a mi ascenso a Brigada, decía para mí:
─
“No quisiera ser destinado por la parte Norte.”
Don Juan says:
When I was close to my promotion to the Brigade, I used to say to myself:
─ “I don’t want to be assigned to the Northern part”.
Se
comprende que la Divina Providencia dispuso que fuera destinado a Santander,
por lo que más tarde medité y reconocí que mi destino estaba en el Norte y
especialmente en los límites de las provincias de Palencia, Asturias y
Santander, en Rionansa.
It can be understood that Divine Providence had destined me
for

primero de Abril de 1961, me hice cargo de la Línea de la Guardia Civil de la
referida demarcación, y cómo no, con muchas recomendaciones por parte de mis
Jefes, como una cosa especial, y con tacto, puesto que mi antecesor había
tenido que salir para otro destino por orden de la Superioridad y en beneficio
del servicio. Llevaba sólo dos meses en mi destino, por lo que apenas había
tenido tiempo suficiente para conocer la demarcación asignada.
On April 1, 1961, I took charge of the line of the Civil Guard in the demarcation referred to, with many recommendations by my bosses, as a special privilege since my predecessor had had to leave for another destination by order of the Superiors and for the good of the service. I had only been in my destination for two months, and I had had sufficient time to know the assigned demarcation.
Los
sucesos que me propongo narrar dan principio el 18 de junio de 1961.
Algo
maravilloso ocurre en mi demarcación, de lo que me doy cuenta el día 20 del
mismo mes, en ocasión en que me encontraba en visita del Médico Dr. D. José
Luis, sorprendido a su vez por las noticias que acababan de darle dos mujeres
de San Sebastián de Garabandal, quienes manifestaban haberse aparecido el
Arcángel San Miguel a cuatro niñas.
The events I propose to narrate begin on June 18, 1961.
Something marvelous occurred in my demarcation, of which I
became aware of on June 20, during an occasion in which Dr. José Luís was
visiting me. He was surprised by the news he had heard from two women
from

que en aquel momento no sé si al Sr. Médico le pedí la receta que me iba a dar
para mi oído, objeto de la consulta, porque me da la impresión de que ya no
llegué a necesitarla, puesto que oí perfectamente las manifestaciones de
aquellas señoras.
I believe that in that moment, I don’t know if I asked the doctor for a prescription for my hearing which was the reason for the appointment, but I had the impression that I didn’t need it, because I had heard perfectly what the women were saying.
Trasladándome
seguidamente al Cuartel, para ponerlo en conocimiento al cabo D. José Fernández
Codesido, al que ordené que lo antes posible se trasladara a San Sebastián de
Garabandal y se informara de las cuatro niñas en relación con el caso que nos
ocupa.
I went to the barracks immediately to pass this knowledge on to the corporal Mr. José Fernández Codesido, whom I ordered to San Sebastián de Garabandal as quickly as possible, to gather information on the four girls in relation to the case that concerned us.
El
mencionado cabo me informó a su regreso que, efectivamente, todas ellas han
coincidido en la misma aparición del Angel. Las protagonistas resultaron ser:
Conchita
González González de 12 años de edad y huérfana de padre.
María
Dolores Mazón González de igual edad que la anterior e hija del Presidente de
la Junta Vecinal de San Sebastián, Sr. Ceferino.
Jacinta
González González, también de 12 años, tiene padres y hermanos.
María
Cruz González Barrido, la más pequeña del grupo, de 11 años.
The aforementioned corporal informed me on his return that factually all of the girls had coincided in the same Apparition of the Angel. The protagonists were:
Conchita González González, 12 years old, without a father.
María Dolores Mazón González, the same age as the previous girl, and daughter of the President of the Neighborhood Assembly, Ceferino.
Jacinta González González, also 12 years old, who had parents and siblings.
María Cruz González Barrido, the youngest of the group at 11 years old.
Las
cuatro videntes informaron, por separado, al cabo Fernández que:
─
Ellas se hallaban jugando a las «canicas» a la entrada de la Calleja llamada la
«Ventura» junto a un pequeño huerto adjudicado al Sr. Maestro de la Escuela,
huerto en el que había un manzano lleno de fruta, lo que a las niñas llamó la
atención, y como cosa de criaturas cogieron manzanas del árbol, como es
natural, para comérselas, no dándole importancia alguna por ser cosa de niñas.
The four girls separately informed corporal Fernández that:
─ They had been playing marbles
at the entrance of a country road called “
Pero
en cuanto a las apariciones creí conveniente poner en antecedentes a mis
superiores. Pero siguiendo los consejos del cura-párroco, don Valentín
Marichalar, retrasé esta información unos días, en espera de nuevos
acontecimientos.
Regarding the Apparitions, I thought it convenient to put the matter before my superiors. But, following the advice of the parish priest, Fr. Valentín Marichalar, I held back the information for a few days to await new events.
El
día 21 de dicho mes de junio decidí ir a visitar al cura-párroco, al que
encontré en el camino en el coche del Indiano Eustaquio Cuenca, con el fin de
dirigirse a Santander para entrevistarse con el Sr. Obispo. Lo que me obligó a
regresar apresuradamente al cuartel y remitir por mediación de un guardia una
nota informativa a mi Jefe Superior, informándole de todo lo ocurrido en
Garabandal.
On June 21, I decided to visit the parish priest, who I met
on the road in Mr. Eustaquio Cuenca’s car on his way to
Al
siguiente día 22, me dispuse de nuevo a subir a Garabandal con mi ordenanza
para informarme personalmente sobre los hechos allí acaecidos.
Garabandal
es una pequeña aldea montañesa, compuesta por unos 70 vecinos aproximadamente.
Resulta grande o inmensa por la innata cordialidad de sus moradores.
The next day, June 22, I decided to go up to Garabandal with my orderly to personally inform myself about the events that were happening there.
Garabandal is a small mountain village of about 70 neighbors. However, it is immense in the innate cordiality of its inhabitants.
Enclavada
en las estribaciones de los Picos de Europa y próxima a Peña Sagra, limita esta
zona con las provincias de Asturias, Palencia y Santander. Para llegar hasta
Garabandal hay que subir un duro camino que arranca de Cosío. Serpentea por la
montaña durante siete kilómetros hasta alcanzar el pueblo.
Located in the foothills of the Picos de Europa and near
Peña Sagra, the limits of this zone border with the provinces of

se sube fácilmente por la carretera que se construyó después. El antiguo camino
tenia algunos repechos difíciles para vehículos debido al barro y las piedras
por lo que se subía frecuentemente a pie o en vehículos todo terreno.
Presently, it is easier to climb up there since they later built the highway. The old road had some short, steep slopes that were difficult for vehicles because of the mud and stones. For this reason, people frequently ascended by foot or in all-terrain vehicles.
Durante
mi acceso a la pequeña localidad pude apreciar un paisaje maravilloso, que me
hizo recordar los «Belenes» que en época navideña se hacen en Cataluña. Ya en
el pueblo, observé cómo corrían por las calles el agua, las gallinas, las
cochinillas... sin que faltaran ovejas, cabras y vacas con sus tintineantes
esquilas y cencerros.
During my uphill approach to the little village, I appreciated the marvelous countryside, which made me remember the nativity scenes that are made in Cataluña at Christmas time. In the village, I observed how water, geese, and pigs ran through the streets… there were also sheep, goats, and cows with their bells tinkling.
Las
costumbres de sus habitantes son primordialmente religiosas.
Jamás
olvidan, bajo pretexto alguno, el rezo del Angelus, tan pronto como el reloj
señala las doce horas (mediodía). Por la tarde rezan el santo rosario dirigido
por el cura-párroco, y en su ausencia, por la Maestra o por la viuda Maximina.
Al entrar la noche, la mujer de Simón y madre de la vidente Jacinta sale por el
pueblo con un farol y una campanilla, y recuerda a todos los moradores las
últimas oraciones de la jornada.
The customs of the inhabitants were primordially religious.
They never forget, under any pretext, to pray the Angelus as soon as the clock strikes noon. In the afternoon they pray the holy rosary, which is led by the parish priest, or in his absence, by the schoolmistress or the widow Maximina. When night arrives, Simon’s wife, Jacinta’s mother, goes out through the village with a lantern and a bell to remind everyone to say the last prayers of the day.
Los
domingos, después de haber oído la Santa Misa en la Iglesia humilde y antigua,
se toman un poco de descanso. Por la tarde, la juventud se reúne debajo de uno
de los porches, y cantan y se divierten al son de una pandereta, destacando el
respeto y honestidad en sus voces y movimientos.
On Sundays, after hearing Holy Mass in the humble and ancient Church, they rest a little bit. In the afternoon, the youth gather on a porch and sing and amuse themselves with a tambourine, their voices and movements emphasize their respect and honesty.
Se
observa el curso de un riachuelo que recoge las aguas de las lluvias y que
atraviesa la plaza y el pequeño puente que lo cruza en dirección al pórtico de
la Iglesia. Este puentecillo, cuando era atravesado por varias niñas juntas en
éxtasis, si alguna quedaba fuera de él, caminaba sobre el "aire" sin
caerse.
One can observe the path of a stream that gathers water from the rain and crosses the plaza and the small bridge which crosses in the direction of the Church portico. This little bridge was sometimes crossed by various girls in ecstasy; when one of them was left wide of it, she would walk over in the “air” without falling off.
Ya
en el pueblo, como he dicho, acompañado de mi ordenanza, Celemín.
Mi
ordenanza, Celemín, me presentó a una vecina llamada Valentina, mostrándose
dicha señora muy amable, reflejando en su rostro una expresión de bondad y
cariño, y tratándome como si me conociera ya de antemano.
Once in the village, as I said, my orderly Celemín was accompanying.
My orderly Celemín introduced me to a neighbor lady named Valentina. This amiable woman, whose face reflected goodness and love, treated me as though she’d known me for years.
Sin hacerse rogar, me manifestó
que:
La primera aparición había
tenido lugar el domingo, día 18, después de que las niñas salieran de rezar el
santo
Without making us beg, she told us that:
The first Apparition had taken place on Sunday, June 18, after the girls had come out from praying the Holy Rosary and attending Catechism class in the Church.
Una
vez libres para sus juegos, decidieron ir a la Calleja de la Ventura,
desprendiéndose de una de las que les acompañaban, o invitando a otra a que
subiera con ellas para jugar a las canicas, cosa que hicieron como también
coger unas manzanas del árbol del huerto del Sr. Maestro, quien, viendo que el
árbol se movía, encargó a su esposa se enterara de lo que ocurría, pues
creyeron se trataba de las ovejas que estaban en el manzano.
Once they were free to play, they decided to go to
Al
oír, las cuatro se echaron a reír y nada pasó. Una vez saciadas y con alguna
fruta en los bolsillos, sienten los primeros remordimientos de conciencia, y la
reacción de las niñas fue culpar al diablo por lo que habían hecho; y, en todo
furor, cogieron todas ellas sendas piedras, arrojándolas hacia un rincón con
todas sus fuerzas, donde creyeron que estaba el diablo riéndose de ellas. Una
vez tranquilas, se dispusieron a salir del mentado huerto para volver a sus
juegos.
When they heard this, the four girls began to laugh and nothing happened. Once they were full and had some fruit in their pockets, they felt the first pangs of their consciences. Their reaction to this was to blame the devil for what they had done. They took stones and threw them with all of their might towards a corner where they thought the devil was laughing at them. Once they were calm, they decided to leave the mentioned orchard and return to their games.
Fue
entonces cuando Conchita vio aparecerse de pronto a una figura muy bella,
pequeña, y con alas muy relucientes, y señalando hacia la aparición decía:
─ “Ahí... ahí...”
It was then that Conchita saw a very beautiful figure appear, which was small, with glittering wings, and making a sign toward the apparition, she said:
─ “There… there…”
Las
restantes niñas, al ver a Conchita en semejante posición trataron de correr
para avisar a su familia, porque creían que le había dado un mareo, momento
aquel en que las demás también se extasiaron viendo al Ángel en esta posición,
todas gritaron:
─ “El Angel.”
The remaining girls, upon seeing Conchita in that position,
tried to run to warn her family, because they thought she was having an attack.
But then, the four girls fell into ecstasy and saw the Angel in that
position. They all shouted:
─ “The Angel.”
Unos
niños que jugaban también en la calleja las apedrearon, y fue cuando el Ángel
las llevó más arriba, en la Calleja, a unos 50 metros.
Una
vez allí, en posición de rodillas y mientras veían al Angel y le escuchaban,
quiso pasar por entre ellas un vecino que venía de arriba de la montaña con un
panal para la miel, y al ver que no se separaban para dejarlo paso, se molestó
por no dejarle pasar, ignorando de lo que se trataba.
Some children who were also playing in the calleja threw stones at the girls, and that was when the Angel carried them about 50 meters higher on the road.
Once they were there on their knees while they were seeing the Angel and were listening to him, a neighbor who had come from the mountain wanted to pass between them with a honeycomb for honey, and when he saw that they would not move out of the way to let him pass, he was annoyed, unaware of what was happening.
Una
vez pasó en dirección al pueblo, se extrañó que las niñas continuaran en la
posición que las había visto. Cuenta el narrante que en toda la noche no pudo
dormir, pensando que algo raro había visto; lo que explicó a su mujer, la que
respondió que se trataba de cosas de niñas.
Once he went past them in the direction of the village, he thought it was strange that the girls remained in the same position that he had seen them in. He says that he couldn’t sleep that whole night because he was thinking about how strange it was. He explained it to his wife, who responded that it was the stuff of children.
Durante
esta primera aparición, el Ángel encargó a las cuatro niñas que cada día fueran
al mismo sitio a rezar el santo rosario y que él estaría con ellas.
Las
niñas asustadas y llorosas fueron hacia la Iglesia para rezar y más tarde a
manifestarlo a sus respectivas familias. La reacción de los familiares,
temiendo que sus hijas les mintieran, era contraria a que tuvieran que ir al
siguiente día a la Calleja.
During that first Apparition, the Angel requested of the four girls to go to the same place and pray the holy rosary each day, and that he would be there with them.
The girls were frightened and crying as they went toward the Church to pray, and later, as they relayed it to their families. The reaction of the family members, fearing that their daughters were lying, was against letting them go to the Calleja the next day.
La
única que se opuso fue la madre de Conchita; pero al insistir las demás niñas,
quiso disimular para que fuera con ellas a la Calleja, prometiéndole que se
fueran las tres y que Conchita iría después para unirse a ellas.
The only one who opposed this was Conchita’s mother. But as the rest of the girls insisted, she tried to pretend, promising them that Conchita would go to meet them later.
La
señora Valentina decía que:
─
“Vale más que vean al Angel que no otra cosa peor.”
Señora Valentina used to say
that:
─ “It is better for them to see an Angel, than something worse.”
Varias
mujeres las espían y, al ver que es cierto lo que ellas manifestaban, se
produjo gran revuelo en el pueblo; lo anunciaron a todos, y convencidos y sin
que persona alguna se burlara, acudieron a la Calleja para presenciarlo.
Several women spied on them, and seeing that what they said was true, a great commotion was produced in the village. They announced it to everyone and being convinced and without anyone mocking it; they went to the calleja to witness it.
A
partir de este día yo estaba contento y ordené se pusiera una pareja de
vigilancia en Garabandal; la noticia corrió por todos los pueblos limítrofes, y
a diario se desplazaban gentes a Garabandal, lo que motivó que se intensificara
la vigilancia.
Después
de la tercera o cuarta aparición del Angel, pasaron ocho o nueve días sin
nuevas apariciones, por lo que la gente llegó a desconfiar.
After that day, I was happy and I ordered a pair of Civil Guards to watch Garabandal. The news ran through all of the neighboring villages, and people came to Garabandal daily, which was what motivated me to intensify the vigilance.
After the third or fourth Apparition of the Angel, eight or nine days passed without a new Apparition, so the people began to be distrustful.
Después
de esos días volvió a aparecer el Ángel y cada día se encontraban en Garabandal
de 500 a 3.000 peregrinos para presenciarlo.
Recuerdo
que las videntes decían que tenían tres llamadas. A la primera, dicen, que
experimentaban una sensación de alegría del pecho a la garganta, y lo mismo con
la segunda. Pero cuando ya tenían dos llamadas se les notaba, pues se ponían
muy nerviosas y se colocaban un suéter, como si tuvieran que ir a la Iglesia.
After these days, the Angel appeared again and each day 500 to 3000 pilgrims came to Garabandal to witness the Apparitions.
I remember that the seers said that they had three calls. At the first call, they said that they experienced a sensation of joy from their chests to their throats, and the same with the second. But when they already had two calls, one could notice that they would become very nervous and they’d put on a sweater as if they had to go to the Church.
Después
de varias apariciones del Ángel, llegó a San Sebastián de Garabandal un maestro
para dar lecciones de las asignaturas suspendidas al hijo del Indiano Eustaquio
Cuenca, y este maestro, por intercesión del cura párroco don Valentín, tenía
que estar pendiente y acompañar a las videntes durante su aparición, para
escuchar las charlas que sostenían con el Ángel y tomar nota.
After several Apparitions of the Angel, a teacher arrived in San Sebastián de Garabandal to give lessons on the failed subjects by Eustaquio Cuenca’s son. This teacher, through the intercession of Fr. Valentín, had to stay and accompany the seers during their apparitions so he could hear the chats that they had with the Angel and take notes.
La
gente que subía para ver las apariciones, se decía si las hipnotizaban o las
daban píldoras y otras cosas por el estilo.
Después
de una aparición, me participa un compañero, Sargento de la Guardia Civil que,
al terminar el éxtasis de Conchita, el maestro se la había llevado a casa del
Indiano Eustaquio Cuenca; y que va a resultar que cuanto dice la gente es
verdad, y afirman que es el maestro que les da las píldoras.
The people who ascended to see the Apparitions discussed whether the girls were hypnotized or given pills, or other things like this.
After an Apparition, my companion, a Sergeant of the Civil Guard, informed me, that after Conchita’s ecstasy ended she had been taken to Mr. Eustaquio Cuenca’s house by the teacher. It would turn out that what the people were suggesting was true, and they affirmed that the teacher was giving them pills.
Acto
seguido me trasladé a casa de Eustaquio Cuenca, el Indiano y, efectivamente,
compruebo que el maestro está en una habitación con Conchita.
Le
preguntó el objeto del caso y me responde que, por encargo de don Valentín, al
terminar la aparición se informa por la vidente de lo que han conversado con el
Ángel y qué es lo que quiere, para después hacer como una especie de informe y
darlo a don Valentín para su entrega al Sr. Obispo.
Next, I went to Eustaquio Cuenca, the wealthy man’s house, and effectively, I proved that the teacher was in a room with Conchita.
I asked him about the object of the case and he responded that, by Fr. Valentín’s charge, when the Apparition ended, he was to gather information from the seer of what they had conversed with the Angel and of what he wants, so he can later make a report to give Fr. Valentín for the Bishop.
No
falta quien dice que Conchita se pone de acuerdo con las otras y marchan a la
misma hora a la aparición, que es la que influye en las demás.
Dicen
igualmente que es una enfermedad; es cuando a petición del padre de María
Dolores reclaman la presencia del Médico don José Luis, titular de la comarca,
y sube en compañía del Alcalde y del Presidente, y las recluyen en el bar de
Ceferino; las introducen en el cuarto donde Ceferino guarda el pan, y las
reconoce el Médico.
There is always someone who will suggest that Conchita makes an agreement with the other girls to go out at the same time to the apparition; they said that she is the one who influences the others.
Just the same, they also claim that it is a sickness. Like when, at the request of María Dolores’s father, they demanded the presence of the doctor, José Luís, director of the region, and he comes up in the company of the Mayor and the President, and they hold the girls away in Ceferino’s bar. Then they take them into the room where Ceferino keeps the bread, and the doctor gives them a medical checkup.
Recuerdo que a medida que eran
reconocidas, salían disparadas para ir después a la Calleja y estar en la
visión del Ángel.
El médico dice que las niñas
están epilépticas y enfermas; que todo lo que pasaba es debido a la enfermedad
que tienen.
Pero
yo veo que las videntes están la mar de bien y que cada día están más guapas y
más sanas; mientras que los padres y hermanos presentan un aspecto de
cansancio, y sus rostros, como si estuvieran agotados físicamente, denotan
falta de sueño y reposo.
I remember that as they were checked up they left quickly so they could go to the calleja, to be near the vision of the Angel.
The doctor said that the girls had epilepsy and were sick; everything that happened was because of a sickness they had.
But I can see that the seers are very well and each day they are more and more beautiful and healthy, even though their parents and siblings seem tired, and it shows in their faces that they are physically drained; the lack of sleep and rest is apparent.
Se
ordena por el Cura párroco y otros que se las separe de dos en dos, para
comprobar si todas ellas acuden a la misma hora a la aparición.
Efectivamente,
cuando sucede la última aparición salen las cuatro de distinto lugar
coincidiendo en el Cuadro a la misma hora. Las cuatro niñas salen del éxtasis
con la misma facilidad con que entraron. Estaban más contentas y absolutamente
normales
Cuantos
contemplan las escenas quedan impresionados, todos quieren tocarlas el pelo y
las mujeres besarlas, gracias a la pareja que las custodia hasta que se
disuelve la aglomeración.
The parish priest and others ordered them to separate into two groups of two to see if they respond to the Apparition at the same time.
Effectively, when the last Apparition happened, the four girls left from different places and reached the Cuadro at the same time. The four girls left the ecstasy with the same ease they entered. They were very happy and absolutely normal.
All those who witness these scenes are left very impressed. Everyone wants to touch their hair and the women want to kiss them, thanks to the couple in charge of their custody until the crowd is dispersed.
El
sábado, 24 de junio la gente que había de cuantos lugares tenían noticias los
sucesos, deambulaba por el pueblo.
En
el lugar de la aparición se levantó un cerco de madera para evitar que las
videntes fueran maltratadas a pinchazos, y que fueran rodeadas sólo por los
curas y quitaran la vista a los demás, y a fin de evitar también las avalanchas
del público para no presionar a las videntes.
Al
terminar la aparición se trasladaron a la sacristía de la iglesia para explicar
a don Valentín lo que habían visto y también a otros observadores desconocidos.
Saturday, June 24, the people who had heard the news in so many places walked through the village.
In the place of the Apparition, they put up a wooden fence so that the seers would not be mistreated and pinched. Or that they would become surrounded by the priests blocking the view of the rest of the people, finally, to avoid that the avalanches of people would crush the seers.
When the apparition ended, they went to the sacristy of the Church to explain what they had seen to Fr. Valentín and other unknown observers.
Días
24 y 25 de junio:
Había
mucha más gente que en días anteriores, varios sacerdotes y médicos. Durante el
éxtasis un médico quiso levantar a Conchita, y por el exceso de peso que, por
lo visto, experimentaba cuando se hallaba en tal estado, se le cayó desde
regular altura dando con las rodillas en el suelo, produciéndose un buen
crujido.
June 24 and 25
There were many more people than on the previous days, including many priests and doctors. During the ecstasy, a doctor wanted to lift Conchita, but because of her excessive increase in weight that she experienced while in this state, he dropped her from a regular height, hitting her knees hard on the ground.
Al
terminar y examinar a las niñas se observaban claramente las marcas de la caída
de Conchita, de pinchazos, golpes y arañazos que a manera de pruebas habían
hecho algunos a las videntes, sin que ellas acusaran el menor dolor ni hubieran
hecho la menor expresión cuando se las produjeron.
De
nada se enteraban, ni del mundo exterior; y pasado el éxtasis tampoco les
dolía; sólo les quedaba señal.
After it ended, as they examined the girls, they clearly observed the marks from Conchita’s fall, from pinch marks, hits, and scratches that people had done to the girls as a way of testing them. They did not have the least pain, nor did they show any reaction when it happened.

pocos segundos y menos todavía, con expresión angelical. Esta vez el Ángel les
dijo que, al día siguiente, verían a la Virgen.
