La Calleja se encontraba repleta de gente que rezaba el rosario. Todos querían presenciar el éxtasis.

Sunday, July 2:

I found the “Calleja” (road to the Pines) full of people praying the Rosary.  Everyone wanted to witness the ecstasy.

A mi lado se encontraba el segundo Jefe del Salto de Nansa, Sr. Rocha, que había subido al Dr. Morales y Dr. Piñal, ambos nombrados de la Comisión por el Sr. Obispo Fernández, y recuerdo que me dijo el Sr. Rocha:

─ “Esta tarde las videntes no subirán al Cuadro para ver la visión.”

Le respondí que:

─ “En las cosas divinas no tenía el menor poder médico alguno.

Next to me, I found the second Chief of Salto de Nansa, Mr. Rocha, who had brought up with him Dr. Morales and Dr. Piñal, both named to the Commission by Bishop Fernández, and I remember that Mr. Rocha said to me:

─ “This afternoon the seers will not go up to the Cuadro to see the vision.”

I responded that:

─ “In divine things, a doctor does not have the least power.”

Le acerqué a la curva de la callejuela y comprobé que se encontraban a mitad de la misma. Permanecí en espera a que subieran al Cuadro para impedir el doctor que se produjera la aparición, con la sorpresa del Sr. Rocha de que las videntes subieran al Cuadro, sin que fuera molestado por la potencia del Dr. Morales.

I neared him to the curve of the road and I discovered that they were in the middle of it.  I remained there, awaiting their ascent to the Cuadro so the doctor could impede the Apparition from taking place.  To the surprise of Mr. Rocha, the seers went up to the Cuadro, unbothered by the efforts of Dr. Morales.

Todas ya, de rodillas, iniciaron el primer misterio del Rosario, y acto seguido tuvieron la visión. Llegó al lugar el Dr. Morales y dijo:

─ “Esto ya está visto.”

O sea, que el doctor no había podido lograr evitar la aparición.

Las cuatro videntes lanzaron un grito a la vez, diciendo:

─ “La Virgen.”

All of them already on their knees, began the first mystery of the Rosary, and then they had the vision.  Dr. Morales arrived at the place and said:

─ “I have already seen this.”

That is to say, that the doctor had not been able to stop the Apparition.

The four seers yelled at the same time, saying:

─ “The Virgin.”

En principio creyeron que fuera Ntra. Sra. del Perpetuo Socorro, y después se oyó, que era Ntra. Sra. del Carmen, porque tanto el Niño Jesús como la Virgen llevaban en sus manos el escapulario.

La Virgen estaba rodeada de seis ángeles, contados por la Conchita que se oía perfectamente.

También decía Conchita:

─ “¡Qué Ojo!”

At the beginning they believed that it was Our Lady of Perpetual Help, but I heard later that it was Our Lady of Mount Carmel, because both them, the Virgin and the Child Jesus were carrying a scapular in their hands.

The Virgin was surrounded by six angels, I heard Conchita count perfectly.

Conchita also said:

─ “What an Eye!”

A la derecha de la Virgen apareció como un cuadro de fuego. Después de la visión se pudo saber que era la Sma. Trinidad, en forma de Ojo. Representa a Dios que todo lo ve.

Destacaba la rigidez de las videntes con lágrimas en sus ojos y muy demacradas con cara de cera. Siendo la que más lloraba Mari Cruz, a la que un médico cogió por la garganta para apartarla de la mirada al frente, y no pudo conseguirlo; pero sí oí un chasquido de torcedura muy grande; creí que la hubiera causado daño; sin embargo, nada le había sucedido.

To the right of the Virgin appeared something like a square of fire. After the vision, we learned that it was the Most Holy Trinity, in the form of an Eye.  It represented God that sees everything.

The rigidity of the girls was emphasized, with tears in their eyes and very pale faces that looked like wax.  Since Mari Cruz cried the most, a doctor took her by the throat to turn her glance away from the front, but he couldn’t do it.  I heard one loud crack when he turned her, and I thought that he might have hurt her, but nothing had happened.

Cuando las videntes llevaban un rato en la visión, su rostro era ya más tranquilo, su posición, frente a los pinos:

A la derecha, María Dolores; le seguía Conchita y a continuación Jacinta. A la izquierda y a mi lado estaba Mari Cruz; todas tenían en sus manos rosarios y cuentan a la Virgen lo que hacen en sus faenas de casa, lo que se oye perfectamente.

When the seers had been in the vision for awhile, their faces were more tranquil, and their positions in front of the Pines were the following:

At the right was María Dolores, followed by Conchita and then Jacinta.  On the left and at my side was Mari Cruz.  They all had rosaries in their hands and they were telling the Virgin how they did chores in their houses, which I heard perfectly.

María Dolores enseña los dientes, pues se supo después que la Virgen había dicho que tenía unos dientes muy bonitos. A continuación Conchita con la boca poco torcida y abierta muestra a la Virgen que tiene una muela picada.

También se comprende que las pregunta la Virgen cómo es el cura, y responden que don Valentín es muy feo, pero muy bueno. El propio don Valentín pudo oír estas palabras y muchos de los estábamos junto a ellas. Le decía a la Virgen que pedía por los Guardias Civiles que las protegen mucho de los curiosos y evitan que les hagan daño.

María Dolores showed her teeth, and later we learned that the Virgin had told her that she had very beautiful teeth.  Then, Conchita with a somewhat opened and twisted mouth showed the Virgin that she had a tooth with a cavity.

We also understood that the Virgin asked them how the priest was, and they responded that Fr. Valentín is very ugly, but very good.  Fr. Valentín could hear these words as well as many of us that were next to them.  They asked the Virgin to pray for the Civil Guards who protected them from the curious people and kept them from harm.

También le piden a la Virgen que les deje la corona, y al final cede la Virgen y se ve cómo la recogen y se la pasan de una a la otra.

También Conchita pide a la Virgen que le deje una de las estrellas que lleva la corona para que se la ponga ella en la cabeza y los presentes lo vean, y puedan creer en las apariciones, mas la contestación de la Virgen es:

They also asked the Virgin to let them hold her crown.  Finally, the Virgin agreed, and we could see how they received it and passed it to each other.

Conchita also asked the Virgin to let her have one of the stars on her crown so that she could put it on her head and the people there could see and believe in the Apparitions, but the Virgin’s answer was:

─ “Que ya lo creerán.”

Las videntes describen a la Virgen de esta manera:

─ “Vestido blanco, manto azul, corona de estrellas doradas, manos estiradas, con un escapulario marrón, pelo largo y castaño no oscuro y raya en medio; cara muy bonita. Aparenta unos 17 años y es más bien alta, afirmando las cuatro que su voz es inconfundible y muy melodiosa.

─ “They’ll come to believe.”

The seers describe the Virgin in this way:

─ White dress, blue mantle, crown of golden stars, long hands with a brown scapular, long, light brown hair parted in the middle; very beautiful face.  Appears to be about 17 years old and is tall.  The four girls affirm that her voice is unmistakable and very melodious.

A partir de estos momentos he presenciado muchas apariciones y he sido testigo además de los éxtasis, de centenares de marchas extáticas, corriendo velozmente en este estado por las calles del pueblo, e incluso algunas veces lo hacían de espaldas.

Cuando corrían a encontrarse, unas extasiadas y las otras normales, a la que estaba en éxtasis no se le podía alcanzar, incluso algunos del pueblo trataban de correr sin poderlas alcanzar, incluso las videntes en estado normal no podían alcanzar las que estaban en éxtasis.

From this moment on, I have witnessed many Apparitions and I have also been a witness of the ecstasies, of hundreds of ecstatic marches, running quickly in this state through the streets of the village, even backwards sometimes.

When they ran to meet with one another, some in ecstasy and some in normal state, we could never catch up to those who were in ecstasy.  Some people in the village would try to run without reaching them, including some seers in the normal state who could not catch up to those in ecstasy.

Así mismo he sido testigo muchas veces de cómo en pleno éxtasis y una vez besados los objetos por la Virgen, los devolvían a sus propietarios sin equivocación alguna.

Algunos, después de haber besado sus medallas, se las entregaban a otras personas para que las dieran a las videntes a fin de que la Virgen las besara de nuevo; pero se oía decir que ya estaban besados y que por eso no los besaba por segunda vez.

I have also witnessed many times how in the midst of an ecstasy, once the objects have been kissed by the Virgin, the girls would return them to their owners without making a single mistake.

Some people, after having their medals kissed, would give them to other people to give them to the girls so that the Virgin would kiss them again.  But you could hear them say that they were already kissed, and for this reason, she would not kiss them a second time.

Alguien entregaba anillos sellos y no eran besados; sólo besaba los anillos esponsales, y éstos eran entregados muchas veces a los propios dueños entre mucha gente, y sin equivocarse con otros que llevaban en las manos.

He conocido a las videntes «muy feas», pero cuando están en éxtasis tienen una cara bonita y muy angelical; también las he visto caer y pegar con la cabeza en una piedra, sonar un fuerte golpe y dolerme a mí más que a ellas, porque nada les pasaba.

Sometimes someone would give them stamped rings and they would not be kissed by her; She would only kiss wedding rings, and these were given back to their rightful owners among many others around them, without mistaking them from the many other rings that they were carrying in their hands.

I have known the seers to look “very ugly,” but when they are in ecstasy, they have beautiful and angelic faces.  I have also seen them fall and hit their heads on a stone, a hit that makes a loud noise, but it hurts me more than them because nothing happens to them.

Los fenómenos habidos han sido por espacio de tanto tiempo y con tal frecuencia, en el transcurso de una jornada se daban dos y tres éxtasis, que resulta casi imposible enumerarlos y relatarlos todos.

Ello me obliga a recordar tan sólo algunos casos y cosas vividos por mí, aun cuando en mi mente recuerdo tanto y con tal exactitud, que no olvidaré mientras viva si Dios así lo quiere.

The phenomena have been happening for such a period of time and with such frequency that during a given day there could be two or three ecstasies, which makes it impossible to count them and relate all of them.

This causes me to remember only some cases that I witnessed; although my brain remembers so much more and in such detail, that I will not forget them while I live, God-willing.

Las videntes en el Cuadro, muy serias y pendientes de lo que la Virgen estaba encomendándoles. A alguna se le caían lágrimas muy grandes. Mientras que los presentes también recibíamos esta emoción. Al terminar el éxtasis de las cuatro niñas y en un completo silencio anuncia el Padre don Valentín:

─ “La Virgen ha dado a las videntes un mensaje, que no lo pueden decir al Sr. Cura, ni a sus padres, ni al Sr. Obispo.”

The seers were in the Cuadro, very serious and listening carefully to what the Virgin was entrusting to them.  Big tears were falling down the cheeks of one of them.  Those of us who were present were also partaking in this emotion.  When the ecstasy of the four girls ended, Fr. Valentín announced in the midst of complete silence:

─ “The Virgin has given the seers a message that they cannot reveal to the priest, their parents, or the Bishop.”

Al siguiente día tienen que subir ellas solas a los pinos, por encargo de la Virgen y que no haya persona alguna, y para que esto sea vigilado proponen las videntes que les acompañen dos pequeñas, tan pequeñas que tendrían sólo tres años y que apenas se daban cuenta del caso.

Recuerdo que a mí me dijo María Dolores:

The next day, the girls had to go up to the Pines alone as the Virgin instructed.  To insure this, they proposed to bring along two smaller girls with them, so small they were only about three years old and barely realized what was going on.

I remember that María Dolores said to me:

─ “Brigada, usted y mi padre pueden estar cerca, pero a unos 100 metros a la derecha de los pinos, y también el cura con dos religiosas a la izquierda de los pinos, también a unos cien metros, y el resto de la gente, bien retirada.”

─ “Brigadier, you and my father may stay near, about 100 meters away and to the right of the Pines.  The priest and two religious can go to the left of the Pines, also about 100 meters away, and the rest of the people should be further off.”

Así lo hicimos y se pudo observar cuándo estaban en el momento del éxtasis, porque al llorar mucho las videntes, las pequeñas se asustaron y daban voces de llanto. Después se supo que el fin de estar las videntes solas es porque la Virgen tenía que hacerlo constar en el mensaje para el 18 de octubre de 1961.

This is how we did it and the people could observe when they were in the moment of ecstasy because the seers were crying, the young girls became afraid and began to cry out themselves.  Afterwards, the people learned that the seers had to be alone because the Virgin had to be absolutely certain that they knew the message of October 18, 1961.

Con cajones de fruta hicieron un pequeño altar, cogieron flores del campo y lo montaron al pie de los pinos muy bien preparado, muy bien preparado por ellas, que lo hicieron en toda la mañana.

Un día la Virgen se apareció a las videntes en los pinos, lo que fue presenciado por un Guardia Civil de Reinosa y por un amigo suyo que habían subido para ver algún éxtasis, y manifestaron los testigos que Conchita decía a la Virgen:

They made a small altar with empty fruit boxes.  They took flowers from the countryside and set them up at the foot of the Pines, very well prepared by them; they did this the whole morning.

One day, the Virgin appeared to the seers at the Pines, which was witnessed by a Civil Guard from Reinosa and a friend of his who had ascended to see an ecstasy.  The witnesses declared that Conchita said to the Virgin:

─ “pero no te haces daño con esas cañas.”

Porque se aparecía la Virgen en la parte alta y entre dos pinos. Entre los mismos se hallaba la hija de Primitiva, llamada Elvira y otro del pueblo.

─ “But, don’t hurt yourself with those branches.”

She said this since the Virgin appeared in the high part between the Pines.  Primitiva’s daughter, called Elvira, and another man from the village were there with them.

En las primeras apariciones de la Virgen a las videntes, después de dar muchos rosarios y medallas a besar, Conchita muestra sus coletas a la Virgen, en ademán de ofrecérselas.

Los médicos, que sólo subieron un día, acuerdan con el Sr. Obispo de llevarla a Santander; y da la casualidad que el día anterior, como yo no podía estar para ver las apariciones, ordené a los Guardias que observaran ese día, para que, a mi regreso de Santander, me expliquen lo sucedido.

In the first Apparitions of the Virgin to the seers, after giving many rosaries and medals to be kissed, Conchita showed her braids to the Virgin as a gesture of offering them to her.

The doctors, who had only come up one day, agreed with the Bishop that they should take her to Santander.  It just happened that the day before, since I could not be there to see the Apparitions, I had ordered the Guards to observe that day so they could tell me what had happened after my return from Santander.

El 27 de julio se llevan a Conchita a Santander para meterla en un convento; y que las niñas que encuentran pensionadas en el mismo la sacarían por la ciudad para distraería, con el objeto de que se la pasara la enfermedad que ellos creían tenía.

Yo regreso a PuenteNansa y llamo a la pareja para que me explique lo que había sucedido ese día de mi ausencia. Y me informan que:

On July 27, they took Conchita to Santander to put her in a convent, so that the girls interned there could take her out through the city to distract her, so that she could get over the sickness that they thought she had.

I returned to Puentenansa and I called the pair of guards to explain to me what had happened during the day of my absence.  They informed me that:

─ “A la una horas (13 h.) a las tres videntes, Mari Cruz, Jacinta y María Dolores se les apareció el Angel San Miguel, y fueron las tres videntes las que dijeron al Angel que daba pena que este día, al aparecerse la Virgen en Garabandal, Conchita no la vería. Y les dijo el Angel a las tres que Conchita vería a la Santísima Virgen en Santander, a la misma hora que ellas en Garabandal.”

─ “At one o’clock, the Angel St. Michael appeared to the three seers: Mari Cruz, Jacinta, and María Dolores.  The three girls said to the Angel that it pained them that when the Virgin would appear in Garabandal that day Conchita would not see her.  The Angel told them that Conchita would see the Most Holy Virgin in Santander, at the same time they saw her in Garabandal.”

El siguiente día sobre las ocho de la mañana recibo en Puente-Nansa una llamada telefónica del Brigada de la Guardia Civil encargado de la Comandancia, Crecencio, y me dice:

─ “¿Qué fue lo que ocurrió en Garabandal en el día de ayer?”

“A las 13 horas” le dije:

The following day at about eight in the morning, I received a call in Puentenansa from the Brigadier of the Civil Guard in Command, Crecencio, and he said to me:

─ “What happened in Garabandal yesterday?”

“At one o’clock” I said to him:

─ “El Ángel se ha aparecido a Mari Cruz, Jacinta y María Dolores y les ha dicho que Conchita tendría la visión de la Santísima Virgen en Santander a la misma hora que ellas.”

“Confirmando mi compañero Crecencio que, efectivamente, Conchita había tenido por la tarde en Santander la aparición de la Virgen junto a la verja del Convento.”

─ “The Angel has appeared to Mari Cruz, Jacinta, and María Dolores, and has told them that Conchita will have a vision of the Most Holy Virgin in Santander at the same hour as them.”

My colleague Crecencio confirmed that as a matter of fact, Conchita had had an Apparition of the Virgin in the afternoon in Santander, next to the iron fence of the Convent.

Un joven que yo había visto en Garabandal, a donde había subido para presenciar las apariciones y que conocía perfectamente a las cuatro videntes, me confirmó que al ver a Conchita en Santander, en unión de varias nenas, por encima del túnel que va de una de las calles a la Estación Férrea, caminando hacia el Convento, Conchita cayó en éxtasis en plena calle.

Cuando la madre de Conchita regresó a Garabandal decía que su hija estaba enferma y que por esto tenía las visiones en Garabandal; que todo era mentira, que se lo habían anunciado no sé qué autoridades eclesiásticas.

A young man that I had seen in Garabandal when I had gone up to witness the apparition, and who also knew the four seers, confirmed to me that he saw Conchita in Santander walking toward the Convent with various girls, over the tunnel that goes from one of the streets to the Railroad Station.  Conchita fell into ecstasy out on the street.

When Conchita’s mother returned to Garabandal, she said that her daughter was sick and that is why she had visions in Garabandal; that everything was a lie, that this was what some ecclesiastical authorities had declared to her.

Estando yo cerca de la fuente donada por Eustaquio a Garabandal, dos vecinas del mismo pueblo decían a la madre de Mari Cruz que todo era falso; de no haberme encontrado en aquel lugar habría habido pelea por parte de la madre de Mari Cruz; mas nada pasó afortunadamente.

Llegó Serafín de la corta de leña en Navarra preguntando a su madre por Conchita y ésta le contesta que está en Santander. Serafín encarga a su madre que la hija regrese a casa.

When I was in front of a fountain that had been donated to Garabandal by Eustaquio, two neighbor ladies from the same village told Mari Cruz’s mother that everything was false.  Had I not been at that place, there would have been a fight by Mari Cruz’s mother. Fortunately, nothing happened.

Serafín arrived from cutting firewood in Navarra, and asked his mother about Conchita.  She answered that Conchita was in Santander.  Serafín told his mother that Conchita should return to the house.

Ya en Garabandal, Conchita, jugando por la tarde en su casa con una vecina, nieta de la señora Primitiva, oye la voz de la Virgen que Conchita reconoce y se le ocurre mirar debajo de su cama por si estuviera allí la Virgen porque no la veía.

La Virgen encargó a Conchita que al siguiente día fuera con sus amiguitas videntes a la visión. Cuando las cuatro estuvieron juntas, Conchita les dijo que no salieran de Garabandal cuando las quisieran llevar.

Once she was back in Garabandal, Conchita was playing in the afternoon at her house with a neighbor, Primitiva’s granddaughter, and she heard the voice of the Virgin, which Conchita recognized.  She thought of looking under her bed to see if the Virgin was there because she could not see her.

The Virgin requested that the next day Conchita should go to the vision with her seer friends.  When the four were together, Conchita told them not to leave Garabandal when they want to take them.

Lo que me contó Conchita cuando le cortaron las coletas:

Dijo que la llevaron a una peluquería donde había dos dependientas y el ama, y una de las dependientas fue a cortarla el pelo y no podía, o es que estaba nerviosa y, que al final, el ama a puro trance se lo cortó; y Conchita en vez de sentirlo, sonreía y decía:

─ “Ahora estoy más guapa.”

This is what Conchita told me when they cut off her braids:

She said that they took her to a hair dresser where there were two shop assistants and the owner.  One of the assistants went to cut the hair and could not do it, or maybe it was that she was nervous and finally, the owner did cut it as if in a trance.  And Conchita instead of mourning over it, she smiled and said:

─ “Now I look more beautiful.”

Ella había cumplido lo que yo comprendía de que un día había prometido ofrecer las coletas a la Virgen; esto creo yo, puesto que ella, con la visión en Garabandal, no hacía más que ofrecérselas a la Virgen.

Enterada la madre de María Dolores de que al regreso de Santander había dicho la madre de Conchita que las videntes estaban enfermas y que todo era mentira, dijo a su hija (sin que lo supiera su padre Ceferino) que cuando tuviera la llamada no fuera a la visión; y llegó la hora y María Dolores fue a la Calleja y estuvo poco rato el Ángel en la visión, un solo minuto y terminó el éxtasis y regresaba a casa llorando.

She had fulfilled what I understood she had once promised: to offer her braids to the Virgin.  This is what I believe, according to her, with the vision of Garabandal.  She didn’t do anything more than offer them to the Virgin.

When María Dolores’s mother learned that upon her return from Santander, Conchita’s mother had said that the seers were sick and that it was all a lie, she told her daughter (without her father Ceferino knowing) that when she had a call she should not go to the vision.  The time arrived and María Dolores went to the Calleja and was there with the Angel for a little while—only for a minute—and then the ecstasy ended and she returned to the house crying.

Al verla su padre le dijo:

─ “Ya te ha dicho tu madre algo; ¿qué es lo que te ha pasado, que vienes llorando?”

María Dolores contesta que:

─ Había estado poco tiempo con el Ángel porque su madre le había dicho que no era verdad lo de las apariciones.

Las piedrecitas besadas por la Virgen:

Upon seeing her, her father said:

─ Your mother has already told you something, what has happened to you, why are you crying?

María Dolores answered that:

─ She had been with the Angel a short time because her mother had said that the Apparitions were not true.

The little stones kissed by the Virgin:

María Dolores sale extasiada de su casa por la Calleja hacia los Pinos; y al salir de la calleja se queda de rodillas, le hacemos un corro, encontrándose a mi lado el Padre Ramón Andréu; vemos cómo María Dolores coge piedras y las da a besar a la Virgen y dice:

─ Esta piedra es para una amiga suya o familia que se encuentra en Cádiz.

María Dolores left her house in ecstasy and went down the road toward the Pines; when she got the road she went down on her knees.  We ran after her and I found Fr. Ramón Andreu at my side.  We saw how María Dolores took stones and she gave them to the Virgin to kiss and said:

─ “This stone is for a friend of hers or family that is in Cádiz.”

Coge otra y hace lo mismo y la ofrece para otra que también se encuentra fuera de Garabandal, y coge otra y no dice nada, dejándola en el suelo; pero la cogí yo y me la guardé en el bolsillo de la sahariana.

María Dolores continúa hablando con la Virgen y se comprende que la Virgen le pide la última piedra que ha besado y le pide a Loli que se la muestre. Loli, mirando hacia arriba y tocando con la mano sobre el suelo, no encuentra la piedra; colocamos dos o tres a su lado, las toca y no hace caso de ellas; pero el P. Andréu dice:

She picked up another one and did the same thing and offered it for another person who was also away from Garabandal.  She took another and didn’t say anything, she put it on the ground; but I picked it up and I put it in my coat pocket.

María Dolores continued speaking with the Virgin and she understood that the Virgin asked for the last stone that had been kissed and asked Loli to show it.  Loli, though she looked upward and touched the ground with her hand, could not find the stone.  We put two or three at her side, she touched them but didn’t pay attention to them, but Fr. Andreu says:

─ “Brigada, saque del bolsillo esa piedra que usted se ha guardado y póngala en el suelo.”

Obedezco y acto seguido parece que la Virgen le dice que ya está en el suelo; Loli toca varias piedras y entre ellas la que yo le puse; la coge y se la muestra a la Virgen y ya queda tranquila; la deja nuevamente en el suelo de donde vuelvo a recogerla y guardarla.

─ “Brigadier, take that stone from your pocket that you have kept and put it on the ground.”

I obey and the next thing that happens is that the Virgin seems to tell her that it is already on the floor.  Loli touches various stones and among them is the one I put down.  She picked it up and showed it to the Virgin and then she was tranquil.  She placed it back down on the ground and I took it again and kept it.

Al terminar el éxtasis le pregunto si la piedra que yo me había quedado y la que ella buscaba la tenía ofrecida a alguien, respondiéndome negativamente, por lo que me quedé con la piedra.

El día que una autoridad subió a Garabandal en unión de don Emilio Valle y sus hijas.

When the ecstasy ended, I asked if the stone I had kept and the one she had looked for had been offered for someone.  She responded negatively to me, so I kept the stone.

One day, an authority figure came up to Garabandal with Mr. Emilio Valle and his daughters.

Aquel día las hijas de don Emiliano me dieron varias medallas para que yo las entregara a María Dolores y ésta se las diera a besar a la Virgen; así lo hice. María Dolores tuvo la aparición en los Pinos. Recuerdo un caso curioso y es que María Dolores se encontraba caída en el suelo, boca arriba, hablando con el Ángel y decía:

─ “Si tú no me ayudas yo no puedo levantarme.”

En este momento vi cómo Loli extendía el brazo y fue incorporándose poco a poco hasta la posición de sentada, al igual que si uno cualquiera le hubiera dado la mano y lentamente le hiciera incorporarse hasta dicha posición.

That day, don Emilio’s daughters gave me various medals so I would give them to María Dolores and she would give them to the Virgin to kiss; this is how we did it. María Dolores had the Apparition in the Pines.  I remember one curious case and that is that we found María Dolores laying flat on the ground facing up, speaking with the Angel and she said:

─ “If you don’t help me, I cannot get up.”

In that moment, I saw how Loli extended her arm and began to sit up little by little until she was in a sitting position, the same as if someone had given her a hand and slowly helped her up to this position.

Subí por la tarde a Garabandal y al llegar me salió al encuentro el Indiano Eustaquio Cuenca y me dice:

─ “Brigada, si usted hubiera subido más pronto habría presenciado y escuchado la voz de la Virgen.”

Y al pasar por casa de Jacinta, se encontraba ésta con María Dolores a la puerta. Me llaman con una gran alegría y me dicen:

I went up to Garabandal in the afternoon and when I arrived Mr. Eustaquio Cuenca came out to meet me and he said to me:

─ “Brigadier, if you had come up sooner you would have witnessed and heard the voice of the Virgin.”

When I passed in front of Jacinta’s house, I found Jacinta with María Dolores at the door.  They called me happily and said to me:

─ Que esta mañana, el Dr. don Angel Domínguez Borreguero Director del Manicomio Provincial de Salamanca les había dejado el micro para que registraran la voz de la Virgen.

Entonces me fui al mentado Dr. Domínguez para que me informara, el cual me dijo que:

─ “la cinta donde están grabadas las palabras de que la Virgen no quiere hablar se la mostraría a usted pero estamos expuestos a que por una pequeña avería se borre.”

─ “This morning, Dr. Angel Domínguez Borreguero, Director of the Provincial Insane Asylum of Salamanca, had left them a microphone so that they could record the voice of the Virgin.

Then I went to the mentioned Dr. Domínguez so that he could inform me.  He told me that:

─ “I would show you the tape where the words of the Virgin are: that she doesn’t want to speak, but we run the risk of erasing it by a mistake.”

El acompañante del Dr. Domínguez era don Gerardo Pleya, Catedrático de la Universidad de Salamanca; ambos se hallaban veraneando en Llanes (Asturias) y, al enterarse de las apariciones, acudieron a Garabandal. Si ellos quieren, pueden dar testimonio.

Dr. Domínguez was accompanied by Mr. Gerardo Pleya, a Professor at the University of Salamanca.  The two were spending the summer in Llanes (Asturias) and, when they learned of the Apparitions, they had come to Garabandal.  If they wanted, they could give testimony.

Día 25 de julio de 1961, festividad de Santiago Apóstol.

Este día tenía una pareja en la Calleja, y otra frente a la casa de Conchita. Las cuatro videntes jugaban en el prado de una cerca y serían aproximadamente las siete y media de la tarde. El cielo estaba completamente libre de nubes.

De pronto se formó una nube muy negra encima de Piedra Sagra, y al mismo tiempo se vio un rayo muy grande de arriba abajo. Las videntes cayeron de rodillas con gran temor. El trueno fue muy estrepitoso; las niñas con la vista extasiada hacia arriba.

July 25, 1961, feast of St. James the Apostle.

That day, I had a pair of guards in the Calleja, and another in front of Conchita’s house.  The four seers were playing in a nearby field, and it was approximately 7:30 in the evening.  The sky was completely free of clouds.

Suddenly, a very black cloud formed over the Piedra Sagra, and at the same time there was a very large streak of lightning from top to bottom.  The seers fell on their knees with great fear.  The thunder was deafening.  The girls were in ecstasy and looking upward.

Tuve que apaciguar los gritos de la madre de Mari Cruz, y todos permanecimos en silencio; y hay quien dijo muy serio, sin darlo importancia, que había visto sobre la luna una figura o dos como viste el Santo Padre.

Cuando el Exmo. Dr. D. Doroteo Fernández y Fernández publicó la primera nota del Obispado recomendando que los curas se abstuvieran de subir a Garabandal, estos subían vestidos de paisano.

I had to calm the screams of Mari Cruz’s mother, and we all stayed in silence.  There was one who said very seriously, without giving it any importance, that he had seen a figure or two like the Holy Father over the moon.

When the Bishop Doroteo Fernández y Fernández published the first note, the Bishopric recommended that the priests abstain from going up to Garabandal, so they used to come up dressed in laymen’s clothing.

Recuerdo que, extasiada Conchita, le decía la Virgen:

─ “Hay tres curas en el pueblo.”

Conchita decía que sólo había uno; y se oyó decir a Conchita:

─ “Hay tres.”

 Llegó hasta dos paisanos que estaban observando; al final se acercaron para informarse bien, y los dos paisanos se identificaron como lo que eran, sacerdotes; sólo que vestían de paisano en vistas de la prohibición del Sr. Obispo. El caso es que ya no volvió a encontrárselos en el pueblo.

I remember that, when Conchita was in ecstasy, the Virgin said:

─ “There are three priests in the village.”

Conchita said that there was only one; and one could hear Conchita say:

─ “There are three.”

Conchita went to where two countrymen were observing her.  Finally, she neared them to be informed, and the two countrymen identified themselves as priests.  Only they were dressed as countrymen because of the prohibitions of the Bishop.  As a result of this, we never saw them again in the village.

También se presentaron otro día dos Alféreces del Cuerpo de Aviación; yo les reconocí y nada quise decir, pero las videntes supieron por la Virgen que eran capellanes.

El día 12 de octubre de 1961 recibí la Cruz a besar, separadamente por las cuatro, como una felicitación de la Virgen por ser el día de mi Patrona y acudir esa tarde a Garabandal.

The other day, two lieutenants from the Aviation Corps came here.  I recognized them and didn’t want to say anything, but the seers knew from the Virgin that they were chaplains.

On October 12, 1961, I received a Cross to kiss, separately by each of the four of them, as congratulations from the Virgin because it was the day of my Patroness, and because I had come to Garabandal that afternoon.

Víspera del Primer Mensaje.

Subí con catorce parejas a mis órdenes, para mantener el orden la misma víspera del 18.

Extasiada Conchita se acercó a mí, y a mí sólo me dio a besar la Cruz, lo que para mí significaba una esperanza de que todo saldría bien

A pesar de la enorme cantidad de personal que subió al pueblo y a pesar de la lluvia torrencial que se sucedió durante todo el día, no pasó la menor desgracia.

The eve of the First Message.

I went up with fourteen pairs (of guards) under my command to keep the order on the eve of October 18.

Conchita went into ecstasy and came near me and she only gave me the Cross to kiss.  This meant for me a sign of hope that everything would turn out well.

In spite of the enormous quantity of people who came up to the village and the torrential rain that poured down during the whole day, not the least unpleasant incident happened.

Calculé en Garabandal de unos doce mil a quince mil personas; y de ochocientos a mil automóviles y sin accidente alguno, lo que fue para mí una gran sorpresa.

Yo estaba junto a las videntes, cuando del pecho sacaron una carta escrita que don Valentín abrió y leyó. Los presentes pedían que se leyera más fuerte, y pude oír claramente que las cuatro videntes le decían todas al mismo tiempo (lo de la carta) y sin equivocarse. Luego la leyó un voluntario con voz fuerte.

I calculated that there were from 12,000 to 15,000 people in Garabandal.  And there were also from 800 to 1000 cars there and not a single accident, which was a great surprise to me.

I was next to the seers when they took out a written letter from the chest area of their clothes, which Fr. Valentín opened and read.  Those present asked for it to be read louder, and I could hear clearly that the four seers were saying at the same time (what was in the letter) without making a mistake.  Then a volunteer read it in a loud voice.

El primer Mensaje dice:

“Hay que hacer muchos sacrificios, mucha penitencia. Visitar al Santísimo. Pero antes tenemos que ser muy buenos. Si no lo hacemos nos vendrá un castigo. Ya se está llenando la copa, y si no cambiamos, nos vendrá un castigo muy grande.”

Todos los que ese día subieron al pueblo, esperaban ver el sol en plena noche como en Fátima. En realidad se hizo lectura de un grave mensaje, que hoy tiene una importancia considerable. Es así que lo he comprendido.

The first Message says:

“It is necessary to make many sacrifices, to do much penance.  To visit the Blessed Sacrament.  But before this, we have to be very good.  If we don’t do this a chastisement will come to us.  The cup is already filling up, and if we don’t change, a very large chastisement will come to us.”

All who came up to the village that day were hoping to see the sun during the night as had happened in Fátima.  In reality, it was the reading of a serious message that has considerable importance today.  This is how I understood it.
