106 D. Juan Antonio del Val y Madre Teresa.

The Apparitions of the Virgin Mary in San Sebastián de Garabandal

106 Fr. Juan Antonio del Val and Mother Teresa

Don Juan Antonio del Val y Madre Teresa de Calcuta.

Fr. Juan Antonio del Val and Mother Teresa of Calcutta

In a letter on November 10, 1987, Mother Teresa communicated the following to Monsignor Father Juan Antonio del Val, Bishop of Santander from 1971-1991:

“It was 1970, 18 years ago, when I first heard about the Apparitions in San Sebastián de Garabandal in Spain.

Sometimes it seems to me that a lot of time has passed, and other times it seems like it was yesterday.  From the beginning, I felt that these events were authentic.”

Mother Teresa always had a great interest in the Apparitions of Garabandal, and she was a personal friend of the seers.  She humbly exposes her desires to the Bishop in a letter that says:

Excelencia:

Your Excellency:

With the desire to satiate the thirst of Jesus on the Cross through you and through each one of your priests, it pleases me to offer individually to each one of you the spiritual help of your Sister.  Through Mary, Mother of the Church, this Sister offers Jesus all she is and has for you, or for the priest who receives this adoption, just as St. Therese of Lisieux did.

In this fashion, the Jesus who is in agony and scourged, crowned with thorns, or crucified in his priests, can find a Veronica who helps him on his road to Calvary.

In this way it will be possible for Jesus to obtain a new Pentecost, not only for your Diocese, but for the whole Church.

In consequence and as a sign of your acceptance of my offering to you, please send me, as soon as possible, the names of all of the priests in your diocese.

I beg you to keep me and all of us in your prayers and Eucharistic Sacrifice.

Dios le bendiga.

M. Teresa, M. C.

God bless you

Response of the Bishop of Santander to Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

M. Teresa y Hns. Misioneras de la Caridad

Calcuta. India.

M. Teresa and the Missionary Sisters of Charity

Calcutta, India.

Upon receiving your letter, I gathered before the Lord in praise and thanks.

Your missionary offering and that of your Sisters of “all that you are and have” for each of the priests in this diocese for me is a great mercy of the Lord for all of us.

The allusion you made to the offering of St. Therese of Lisieux has moved me:  She is the saint that seems to me most like a poor one of Yahweh.

What the Lord has done with you and your Missionary Sisters of Charity in the Church has filled me with gratitude before the Lord for many years, and I have sometimes preached it to priests, religious, and laypeople.

I have had a spiritual conviction that one day there would be mutual communication and fraternity between us.

When my priests heard about your letter, many commented that they had prayed to the Lord for this, and that He is preparing our way for a foundation in the future in this diocese with your Missionary Sisters of Charity.

Before the challenge of secularism, and the disunion and lack of hope that we find here in the West, we who work for the Reign of God have found in your letter a new light and evangelical push.

You and your Missionary Sisters of Charity will stay with our Eucharistic prayer.  Faithfully in the Lord,

Letter from Bishop Don Juan Antonio de Val addressed to the priests of the Diocese, published in the Official Bulletin of the Bishopric of Santander.

Queridos sacerdotes diocesanos:

Dear diocesan priests:

I present to you with happiness a letter from Mother Teresa of Calcutta.  I have finished writing a letter with a proposal of evangelical generosity with us that has filled me with happiness, thanks to God and new hope for the New Year.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s gesture predicts a partiality of the love of God to the priests of the Diocese of Santander.

She asked me for the names of all of the priests of the Diocese so that she could give these names to each of the Missionaries of Charity—the Institution of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.  Each sister, through the intercession of Mary the Mother of the Church, will offer all that she is and has for each one of us in a missionary adoption, just as St. Therese of Lisieux did.

Before this offering, dear brother priests, we are opened anew to conversion to be men of God in service to our brothers from our Church.

When we hear, when we give positive steps in the ecclesiastical communion among us, when we participate in archdiocese and sector meetings, when we make retreats or spiritual communion, when we participate in permanent diocesan formation, and above all, when we preach the Gospel, ministers of the Eucharist and pardon, shepherds of the City of God, when we suffer and work for the Reign of God, upon remembering that a Missionary Sister of Charity in whatever part of the world is giving for one of us, all that she is and has and her service to “the poorest of the poor,” the Christian hope will spring forth in we diocesan priests, and we will be more open to availability, to the grace of God and the light of the Spirit making “something beautiful for God,” according to the frequent expression of Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta once described the day of a Missionary of Charity to journalists.  It is good to remember this to know who we are going to help from this time on.  This is in synthesis:

We begin our day in Calcutta at 4:30 in the morning with prayer, meditation, and Mass.  Our Community is very united.  Next, since each of us has nothing but a pair of saris, so one of them has to be washed each day so we can change.  At 7:30 one of the Sisters leaves for the “home of the abandoned dying.”  Others go to the clinics and homes of the lepers.  Other go to work in the kitchen, to prepare our food and food for the poor.  Others go to visit needy families and the sick.  Others teach catechism.  So, we disperse throughout the whole city.

The sisters disperse throughout the whole city, Rosary in hand.  This is our habit of praying it: while we walk through the streets.  We never approach people without praying.  The Rosary has constituted and continues to constitute strength and protection.

After the meal in the middle of the day, we have our examination of conscience, where we pray the Divine Office and the Way of the Cross.

Following that, all of the Sisters have a half an hour nap because until that point, everyone has been on their feet.  Around two in the afternoon, we have half an hour of spiritual lecture, and then we have a cup of tea.  At three, the Sisters leave again.  We all return from 6:15 to 6:30.

From 6:30 to 7:30 the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration.

At 7:30 we eat dinner.  During 20 minutes of dinner, we dedicate ourselves to preparing for the following day.  From 8:30 to 9 we have free time.  Then everyone speaks in a loud voice because we have been working all day.

At 9 we have night prayer and we prepare the meditation for the following morning.

Every week we have one day of rest.

For this, I give thanks to God in the name of all because this gesture of Mother Teresa of Calcutta to us is a good gift for the New Year we begin, and we have already expressed the fountain of hope and renewal that she is going to bring to our diocesan Church.

Vuestro Obispo con saludos de Año Nuevo.

Juan Antonio del Val Obispo de Santander.
